Explorer "searches might be slow" by
Ray[_6_]
I've turned off the Windows Search service, since I rarely do big
searches and don't need to index file content. But when it's turned
off, every time I do a search a message appears telling me that "Your
searches might be slow because the index is not running". After seeing
it a few dozen times, I get the message! Is there any way to disable
this annoying feature, short of making it happy...

Read-only Flags as Owner by
jcuk
Hi,
I designed my own directory structure in windows xp and used it as a
template for software and file management on vista. (seems to have been
a big mistake)
Currently i have all my games installed just on a Games folder, created
by me in the Program-Files folder.
Steam needs to write its own config file for any edits i make, However

favourite links not creating shortcuts! by
kateinsoll@gmail.com
I managed to delete my Links folder in my user profile. After some
googling I recreated it by typing "shell:links" in the run
command.
But now when I drag a file into the Favorite Links area of the
Navigation pane, it's copying the files instead of creating a
shortcut!
I can force it to create a shortcut by holding down the Alt key - but
this is painful. Is there anyway to get it back to how...

Unable to associate file types to custom application by
Steinar Haugen
I bought a new computer a couple of weeks ago with Windows Vista. A problem
that's occured quite a few times is that I am unable to associate a file type
to an application that doesn't show up in the dialog.
For instance:
1 - I right click on the file and choose "open with" / "choose default
program"
2 - The program I want to use does not show in the "Recommended programs",
so I hit the +...

Vista start menu to act like 2003/XP? by
Tim
Is there a way to modify the vista start menu to open "All Programs" like the
XP and 2003 menu's did, and not the way vista acts like default?
IE: clicking All Programs in XP/Vista creates a submenu with folders on top
of file links. I don't personally care for vista's over-clustered menu with
folders at the bottom..
Any ideas?

how do I find files discarded by Windows upgrade? by
brucedoesbms
I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Ultimate.
While running the Disk Cleanup utility, listed under "files to delete:" was
an unchecked box "Files discarded by Windows upgrade 1.34GB". The
description box below states: "Files from a previous Windows installation. As
a precaution, Windows upgrade keeps a copy of any files that were not moved
to the new...

SaveAs dialog changes file-name to save by
BobF[_9_]
SaveAs dialog typically opens with the file-name box filled in with
the name of the file being saved. E.g. download an internet file by
using the context menu "Save As" choice. The file-name to be downloaded
is automatically inserted into the "SaveAs" dialog.
Very handy!
Now, if you happen to click on a file in the display pane of the
"SaveAs" dialog - say by accident or intentionally to delete...

adding tags to documents by
batgirl
Why can tags be added to pictures but not pdfs? I have lots and being able to
tag them would make so much sense? Is this feature likely to be added at some
point soon?

Locating all document shortcuts by
K Brown
Can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to locate all of the shortcuts
associated with one document/file? Maybe some sort of "family tree" kind of
thing? I have forms that change often stored in a file with several
shortcuts placed throughout the system for ease of access. I need to be able
to quickly find the shortcuts for each document/form.

Volume Shadow Copy Service causing problems by
Gerry Hickman
Hi,
(Vista SP1 x86)
Over the last few months I've been seeing an issue where one of my hard
drives becomes unresponsive, then it returns to normal. At first I
thought it was a faulty hard drive, either remapping bad blocks or
failing internal cache, but extensive block-level and SMART testing
indicated the drive was OK.

Changing Filename COLORS in (VISTA )Windows Explorer (explorer.exe by
Eddie
I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer
similar to the MAC O/S Feature.
This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I
simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE,
GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be...

offline oddities by
satanmat
hello world,
::I’m trying to get some offline things working, Sync thinks that
everything is fine; however I get some really ‘fun’ errors.::
::1, Excel 2003 files won’t open, Excel launches, but the spreadsheet
itself never shows up. Explorer.exe then runs up to 80-90% usage and
just sits there. (after 15 min I give up) – this then causes #2.::
::2, I get new randomly (usually Chinese) named...

Vista and saving pdf files by
EBirdy
Every time I try to save a file as a .pdf, I get the message that "for my
security, Vista is going to save the file to the Temporary Internet folder,
do I wish to open this folder now?" I have NO OPTION to NOT do what Vista
wants. It's incredibly frustrating.
I say "yes" and the file is just gone. I can't find it anywhere - I used
Advanced Search and put in "Everywhere" and searched for...

Moving the Documents folder by
Gordon
As a very new Vista user (about 5 hours!) I want to move my Documents folder
to another partition.
In XP I just right-clicked on My Documents and in the Properties window
there was a "move" option. Can't see anything like that in Vista Home
Premium. Is there?
Thanks

Vista virtualized folder by

I tried to download a trial copy of Adobe Premier Pro video editing software.
The file seemed to download, but Vista will not let me look at it. Adobe
suggested I follow this path to the file;
C:\users\Gerry\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet
files\virtualized folder
The problem is I cannot get any farther than ...\microsoft\windows...
There does not seem to be a temporary...
