IDE to USb Problems
I have an A-Tec HD-227-U2 2.5in Hard Drive enclosure with a Fujitsu hard
drive in it from a dead laptop. I want to recover files from the drive to my Vista PC. The device was recognised when I plugged the enclosure in (I am using both USB cables supplied with the enclosure, with no jumpers on the Hard Drive) and automatically installed the drivers. The device is shown in Device Manager as "Disk Drive" and the properties show it is working properly. The device is not shown in Disk management anywhere and is also missing from my computer. Any ideas why I can't access this drive???

The Laptop died as part of a mainboard failure - have had this confirmed at
repair shop. The disk is spinning in the enclosure and it sounds normal. When I run Rescan in disk management it only shows my normal two internal hard disks and my USB connected external hard drive as well as the DVD drive, but it does not display the enclosure connected drive. I have tried it with the other USB external hard drive disconnected, but the same result - device is in device manager but not in disk management or my computer. If your computer is using SATA drives check your BIOS settings to be sure

Just gone into the CMOS setup and I have no option there to allow PATA or
otherwise. If it helps my system is a Dell Dimension E521 and is SATA. Thought that would be the next step, so I have just tried to install it on my
kid's XP machine, however this time I had to install the drivers from the supplied CD. Once again, the same thing occurs - seen in device manager, but not in disk management or My Computer. I am now of the impression that the device itself is U/S even though it is new, so I'm going to take it back and get another and see if that helps..... IDE to USb Problems
Try jumpering the drive as Master (in a single drive configuration), that
seems to be normal for external drives. Don't connect it through a passive external hub (one with no AC adapter), that defeats the purpose of the auxiliary USB power connector on the drive and it won't have enough power to run/be recognised by the PC. If it still isn't recognised when the drive is connected during boot up, you could try connecting the drive's USB cable after the computer has fully booted --- unless that is prohibited in the enclosure's documentation.
