Default IPOD Shuffle (1st Gen) on Vista Ultimate RTM

When I plug the shuffle into the powered USB dock port, itunes recognizes it
and does what it is supposed to do, but the Vista OS goes totally whacko in
the background. It recognizes the shuffle and creates an entry in device
manager, then drops it, and reinstalls it, over and over and over again.
device manager is constantly refreshing making it impossible to use.

The same effect happens using windows explorer, it is constantly refreshing
as the drive is being created and dropped.

Apple's advice is to disconnect all other USB devices to stop it from
happening. I have at least a dozen USB devices, printers, cameras, scanners,
phones, multi-function ports, external and internal hubs and they all work
just fine.

I'm not going to take my system apart every time the shuffle is attached.

Yes, I have the latest versions of Itunes and have used their reset utility
(using a different computer for the reset).

Apple won't even mention Vista on their websites, though they have millions
of customers who use windows, and according to their boards, thousands with
similar issues. Microsoft does not list ANY Ipods as compatible...

Apple won't even let me email support because the device is no longer under
warranty.

Does anyone have a solution??? Does anyone know how to make it work?
