Default opening email attachments

i get this error message when i try to open an attachment: this file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an
association in the folder options control panel. can you please help me with
this? what does it mean? how do i perform this action?

The message means there is no known program installed on your computer to
open the attachment, so you need to install a program that can read that
type of attachment.

what is the file name of the attachment, specifically the file extension
(the 3 characters after the .)

Did the op mean "xlr"? That's a Microsoft Works spreadsheet file I
think. I wasn't able to find anything for "lxr".

One forum poster said you can change the filename from "filename.xlr" to
"filename.xls" and the result would open in Excel. Just passing that along.
