I have vista home premium on a Dell 9200 Dimension with 2 x 250 Gb hard
drives configured to raid 0. I get an error showing at startup that disk 0
is ok but disk 1 has an error.
I have re-installed the Intel Storage Matrix driver R158601 and the Intel
Storage Matrix Manager R158600. When I look at the Manager I see that a read
or a write error has occurred on disk 1. Chkdsk shows no errors

I have done a backup. I would like to know how to find out if it is a
hardware or software error and what I can do to sort the problem out.

Use the diagnostics utility available from the hd manufacturers site
Basically you create a bootable floppy/cd & boot from this to run the tests
Note raid 0 has no redundency, lose one hd you lose it all

I have exactly the same computer (Dimension 9200) as you and had exactly the
same problem.

I did the same checks as you and in the end concluded that there was nothing
wrong with the disc. So in the Intel Storage Matrix viewer, I just right
clicked on the RAID 0 error, and set it to "ignore". So far, everything
works fine.

Thank you DL and Rich T. I have run the diagnostic utility for Western
Digital disks and it comes up with a cable error and stops. Chkdsk shows no
errors. I don't know what to try next. i've backed up to an external hd.

did you open the case up and check you cables? if not thats the first
thing i'd try .
next i'd switch the 2 cables around (cable 0 to cable 1 and 1 to 0
then run the test again . if the error comes up on cable 0 then repleace
that cable . just make sure that
your power plug is (not pluged in ) when messing around in side the
case.

Thank you scrooge. I have switched the cables round but it made no difference.
The error is Cable Test::Read diagnostics sector error! This happens with
the Quick test so I don't get very far.

When I fire up the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics tool the
Physical Drive just shows one drive of 263883 GB. The Logical Drive shows
the full 500 Gb that is on two RAID 0 disks. How do I know if the diagnostic
tool is working correctly please?

can you unplug 1 drive then run the test and see what happens.if all
go's then unplug
that drive and plug in the other one and see what happens.

I can't seem to get past the RAID controller. It doesn't make any
difference what cables I have plugged in. I've downloaded the dos version of
the diagnostic tool but it results with 'no drive found' error code 0120,
which is 'unknown error'. When I run the BIOS disk diagnostic tool it says
there are no errors with the disk. Any more ideas on how to find out if the
drive is faulty? Much appreciated.

I think it started with a system error with blue screen and a restart, but apart from that, the system seems running fine.

In a few week I'm going to replace the drive, as I can't see any usefull solutions around.

If you want to randomly waste money then yes, go buy a new drive, if you
want to properly troubleshoot the problem, download Western Digitals
diagnostic utility to test the drive and see if it's failing or not.
