Vista Home Basic memory upgrade to 4gb - Blue screen
Hi all, I've been browsing the forum watching several posts on Windows Vista and 4Gb memory issues, but couldn't find a solution. I have a Sony Vaio NR210FH. I upgraded memory to 4 Gb (2 x 2Gb). BIOS recognizes ok, but Vista Home Basic doesn't start. If I only use one 2Gb, it works ok. I'll be glad to reach the 3.5 Gb that other's complain about ... Anyone can help on this? -- gsanche5 |

Vista Home Basic memory upgrade to 4gb - Blue screen
Hi,
Are they a matched pair? Are you using dual channel memory? Are the sticks the same speed? How about if you swap their slots? -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "gsanche5" wrote in message ... The "3.5" GB is not related to your issue. That refers to some of the 4GB
being reserved by the BIOS for memory-mapped IO and the remainder being 3.5GB or so. What does Sony say? I take it that this model is available in Latin America but not in the US. Is the upgrade ram the same brand and latencies as the original ram? Was it shipped to you by Sony? "gsanche5" wrote in message ... Vista Home Basic memory upgrade to 4gb - Blue screen
Thanks Collin! Yes, indeed this Sony VAIO was purchased in Argentina. Originally, it came with 2 Nanya NT512T64UH8B0FN (5300) of 512 each. This Vaio has 2 memory banks. I purchased on Circuit City, 2 *CEN 2GB667LT Centon 2GB PC2-5300 (667Mhz).* With only one installed (2 Gb.) works fine. When I place the second one in the other bank, the BIOS recognizes the 4 Gb. ok, but Vista never starts, puts a bluescreen and whenit tries to restart, goes to the emergency start screen. None of the ways (safe mode, etc.) manages to start Vista. Kind Regards from Latin America. Gustavo. -- gsanche5 |

... Cari: yes, both sticks are exactly the same. Thanks. Gustavo. -- gsanche5 The fact that the BIOS sees it is no guarantee that it does not have an issue when being accessed by software. You mentioned that it runs fine with one stick but the second is the problem. Call the first stick A and the extra stick B. Can you reverse the sticks? Does it run with B in the first slot? If it works with B what happens if you then insert A in the second slot? Have you checked on the computer manufacturer's website for a BIOS update that might address the issue? |

Next, insert both sticks, and run MemTest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/ and see if this yields any clues. |

I've tried inserting the 2 Gb sticks on either slots and the same happens. To do the other thing you suggest, I'll need to boot my notebook somehow. With both sticks on, it never gets to start Vista, so I don't know how could I run a memtest. Any guidance? Thanks. Gustavo. -- gsanche5 |

It's all you can do at the moment. |
