Default vista not recognising external hdd

I have just purchased a new notebook Asus X70sr. My old hp zd7000
pavilion notebook died last week so not only have i had to put up with
the stress of not being able to access all my files and data on a dead
computer its 5 days on and i still am unable to access the 60 gig
hardrive which is now in a vi power enclosure usb2.0 to ide interface.
Running Xp on the old laptop i used previously this drive enclosure
with a 30 gig notebook drive (wifes old acer travelmate) as a back up,
no problems acsessing drive at all.

On the Asus I plugged the drive in, up came "windows is searching
drivers database" and when it finally said that the driver was
successfully installed I went to "my computer"- Nada! "Device manager"
again Nada!! I am already now not a fan of Vista as it would seem i now
have to crack something just to transfer all my stuff across. I have
searched for similar situations to mine but theres nothing definite
mentioned on what to do. People have mentioned uninstalling usb drivers
and re-booting before plugging the drive in again or assigning the drive
another drive letter. how do i do this if i cant find it - Arrrrgh! Can
one of you Techys assist?

What version of XP on the old computer and what version of Vista on the new
one? Was the drive initialized as a Basic disk or Dynamic on the old
computer?

i was running xp home edition on the hp notebook 60 gig hdd.
i am running vista home premium edition 32 bit.
was not quite sure what you meant by optimised? the drive is as it was
removed from the notebook with the xp o/s partition intact. It is
recognised on another xp laptop we have but again not on my wifes vista
home premium toshiba laptop.
I'm guessing then only a vista specific issue.

Not "optimised." I said "initialized." Initializing is assigning the drive
letter and creating the partition.
