Default Cannot install HP D4360 printer on Toshiba OEM Vista Home

I have been searching the web/groups for an answer to this problem and
have not yet found a solution that works. I have a new HP D4360
printer I am trying to install on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with
their OEM version of Vista Home pre-installed.

I install the HP driver (latest version from web) and it proceeds
until it asks that I connect the printer to the USB port. I connect
the printer and the "New Hardware found" wizard starts in the
taskbar. The New Hardware wizard automatically detects and installs a
USB hub that is internal to the printer. The device driver for the
hub is installed properly (the USB port on the front of the printer
works after install).

The Vista hardware wizard then attempts to locate a driver for the
printer and fails. It opens the dialog to allow me to specify where
the driver can be found. Per HP's directions, I cancel this dialog
and allow HP's software to discover that the printer has been
connected. Their software does notice the printer is connected
(dialog changes state and indicates it is communicating with the
printer). However it fails to complete. After about 3 minutes, it
puts up a message indicating that it cannot communicate with the
printer. It seems to complete its install of software, but the
printer driver is not properly installed (the device has a yellow
exclamation mark in the device manager).

If I open the device manager and choose to "Update driver" on the
printer device, Vista works for a while and then says it cannot find a
file necessary for "USB Printing Support". From my searching, this
appears to be a Microsoft driver (not from HP).

I have repeated this process about a dozen times (new USB cable, new
printer, change order of connect/install) with the same results. I
created a Restore point prior to the original install and I have been
restoring back to the "clean" restore point each time before I try
again. HP and Toshiba have not been able to help. Anyone run into
similar problems and find a solution?

Thanks... Tom
