Vista Basic Update Issues

Hello, new to the forum. I'm having some issues with upgrading to
Windows Basic on one of my old computers. I have inserted the dvd into
my dvd-rom it begins to run but then just stops. It won't bring up the
install, and when I try to explore the dvd it does nothing.

I have a Basic 32 bit dvd trying to install on a HP a347x with 512mb
ram, 340gb hd, 2.6ghz intel 4

and I am currently running XP Pro SP1 on that computer

unfortunately its also an illegal version of xp pro so upgrading to sp2
is out of the question.....

thank you for your help... and if i did something wrong please go easy
on me.... ish a noob

Above is the upgrade paths to Vista from XP.
Regardless of legality of your existing Operating System, XP Pro can only
upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate.

Save all your Data, and do a clean install.
Below is very good link on how to do a clean install from upgrade disk.
Also, do yourself a favor, upgrade your RAM from 512MBs at least 1Gig.

One other thing: If you have a full version of Vista basic, not an upgrade disk
(you don't specify which you have).

Set the DVD drive to boot 1st(through Bios, or Boot Menu options at Startup:
F2, Delete or for Boot Menu F12),
Look at lower part of Startup Screen for F Key numbers, or Delete options

Insert vista DVD in Drive, reboot, load files, delete existing XP Pro
partition, make NEW partition, format , etc.

All instructions are on vista disk, once you boot from it.

I'm sure you meant "key", not "disk [sic]" as all Vista installation
discs are the same. The key determines what version gets installed.

Thank you. You are correct.
All versions are contained on the one disk; the key determines the install..
You only need a different disk for 32bit or 64bit.

Colin Bancroft was very good when he explained everything about OEM and
retail disks being able to be used with Retail or OEM product Keys, months
ago.
And upgrade Keys as well.

It's Colin Barnhorst. Or was. He's not posted for months.
