Cannot remove USB Hard disk
I have my portable USB external HDD.
I have never been able to remove the drive with a "safe to remove baloon" If i have browsed the drive , anad then closed all the windows and most of the system tray icons, IT stills says drive in Use ..and wont let me disconnect the USB (from the system tray) Whats wrong? Can i have shortcuts pointing to external drive? can i index an external drive? can i "Add to playlist / library" of Media player from an external drive? |

Cannot remove USB Hard disk
Hi, CEOHotMail.
MAYBE what you need is to run Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc). Right-click on your USB drive and click Properties. On the Policies tab, choose between Optimize for safe removal and Optimize for performance. The second option uses the write-behind cache and there is the risk that your latest disk write has not made it all the way to the drive; the first does not use the cache, so it is safe to remove the device in just seconds after the last disk operation. As to your 3 questions, the answers should all be Yes. But I haven't used an external HDD since my SyQuest SyJet died a few years ago, so I'm not sure that is the right solution for you. RC -- R. C.
