Default No sound with SoundMax on Vista RTM

Good day!

I have upgraded my Dell Precision 450 to Windows Vista Ulitimate RTM. It
installed SoundMax Integrated audio driver. However, there is no sound.

Even the configuration applet does funny things:

1. When trying to test the speakers (Right click on the volume control,
select Playback Devices, selecting speakers, clicking on Configure, and
pressing the Test button) yield the message:

"Failed to play test tone"

This is very useful message, since it tells me that indeed I could not here
the test tone, and it is not my fault...

When trying to configure recording devices, the applet simply get stuck,
and I have to kill it.

I tried to diagnose it a little bit more, and I used Process Monitor to try
to pin point what fails.

I use Process Monitor utility from SysInternals (very very nice) and I got
the following log:

DeviceState and then fails.

This starts to get really annoying!

I hope that a solution is on site

Default SoundMax Integrated Audio on Dell Precision w/Vista

My sound worked for 1 day then died. After spending 2 hours with MS Tech support support engineer found an internal document that matched what had happened. My Windows Audo service will not start. Tech document said it was caused after system came out of hibernation, which is when mine died. Solution was to apply hotfix to Vista. We did and still no sound. MS now says driver might be the problem and I will have to wait until Dell releases new one. MS engineer promised to let me know if they found another solution.

Default Vista SoundMax issues

I was having the same problem with the integrated SoundMax card on my ASUS P4S533-X motherboard. Try to install an older driver. For example I installed a driver signed in 2002 and the sound has mysteriously come back. If ever in doubt use the drivers that you know work. What I have noticed is that Vista is essentially the same OS as XP just with a prettier interface. On the other hand, the jump from Windows 2000 to XP was much more major, where driver compatibility was a real issue. This is not the case when "upgrading" from XP to Vista.

Hope my tips help.

Default no sound with asus mother board

I am quickly hating vista.

I also have no sound and the same gear as you. What driver did you exactly use, I would love some sound.

Default No sound with SoundMax on Vista RTM

I have the same problem where the drivers all look ok but when trying to play
a test sound I get Failed to play test tone. MS was going to email me the fix
but I never got one. The website says to contact them for the hotfix. I did
and still no hotfix in my email. Where did you get your fix from?
Thanks,
Scotty

Default No sound with SoundMax on Vista RTM

have the same problem. The sound will stop working intermittently in WMC and media player. Sometimes after watching a videon clip on the web. After trading emails with a Microsoft support technitian here is what I got -

"Based on the current information, this issue can occur due to an incompatible sound card driver. After installing Windows Vista, we need to install the Windows Vista compatible sound card driver. I notice that your motherboard is Intel D865Perl. Based on my research, Intel does not provide a Windows Vista driver for the sound card integrated in Intel D865Perl. "

They also sent me some links to

"We can also purchase a new sound card which is compatible with Windows Vista. Besides Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List, I have also found the following articles on the Internet for you:

List of Vista Supported Hardware & Software

http://forumz.tomshardware.com/softw...ict232602.html

Vista Compatible/Incompatible Hardware List

http://www.vistaforums.com/forum/Topic2828-41-1.aspx

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information."

If you look at the web pages you'll see that there are very few soundcards that support Vista. Even Creative's new drivers do Not support DVD sound. What a fiasco.
