"HP Universal Printing" driver crashes explorer
Hi, all.
I'm trying to install the recently-released HP Universal Print driver for some Laserjet 4050n network printers, on Vista Ultimate ( 32 bit ). I'm currently using the in-box drivers that shipped with Vista succesfully, printing via a "Standard TCP/IP port". I was waiting for a more full-featured driver from HP, and it seems to be released, but I can't make it work. The downloaded file unzips OK, and I can run the 'Install.exe' file. This starts up the installer. The installer then fires up Window's native "Install Printer" wizard. This opens over the top of the HP installer, obscuring it from view ( unless you move it.. ) I choose: Add Local Printer | Existing Port | Choose the existing "Standard TCP/IP port". We get to the point where we choose the driver, and it presents us with "HP Universal Printing PCL5" ( Signed ), and I accept this driver. Off it goes, installing the driver. I choose not to share, and choose not to print a test page, and Finish the "Install Printer" wizard, which seemed to go well. However: The Windows "Install Printer" wizard window then closes, leaving the HP installer, which is showing: Status: Install Procedure for printer "HP Universal Printing PCL5" failed or was cancelled. No mention of what the failure was. The 'HP Universal Printer" is now present in the printers folder, however r-click | Properties causes a pause, followed by "Windows Explorer has stopped working"... The "details" gives this: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Explorer.EXE Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386 Application Timestamp: 4549b091 Fault Module Name: colorui.dll_unloaded Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bd05 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 6c5a644f OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 2057 Additional Information 1: 8d13 Additional Information 2: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311 Additional Information 3: 8d13 Additional Information 4: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311 Any ideas what is causing this? "colorui.dll_unloaded" seems to be a clue, but what to? I get the same for the PCL6 driver too. I've tried installing with UAC on and off ( I'm logged in with a Domain Admin account ). Office 2007 is installed, as is Acrobat 8, if it's relevant. -- Best Regards, Ron Lowe |

I've got a LaserJet 2100xi. Ditto on crashing. Anyone have an answer to
this? HP message groups give no hints. "viersich" wrote in message ... Hi "Ron Lowe" wrote: The 'HP Universal Printer" is now present in the printers folder, however r-click | Properties causes a pause, followed by "Windows Explorer has stopped working"... Welcome to the club... *sigh* Bye Marc |

If the driver you use is the Universal driver, this is a known issue in
colorui.dll Keep sending in the werdumps if you are on the internet. The more crash information we get, the better ammo to make the changes. -- Alan Morris Windows Printing Team Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base he http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. The one HP recently posted as suitable for vista. And yes, the fauting module is indeed colorui.dll. Have HP *really* released a driver that just plain crashes with 100% repeatability? Yes
But you cannot blame HP for this failure. I'll make sure that HP is aware of the issue. -- Alan Morris Windows Printing Team Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base he http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I did a re-install, system restore, etc., but never got it to work. What finally resolved it was loading the XP PCL driver. It seems to work file with that. Mike O. |
