Continuous HDD read in Vista
Hi,
Just installed Vista. Whenever I start my machine, the HDD continuously reads (or writes, don't know, the HDD activity light is on). There is heavy HDD activity. It doesn't stop at all. Not even after a few hours. So I checked in Task Manager and nothing suspicious there. So I closed a few dumb programs that I don't use - like WinMail and others. The HDD acticity then stops. Sometimes even after closing WinMail and other programs, the read won't stop. There is no other program running on my machine, no scanners, no downloads, nothing at all. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution? Seems weird to me. Thanks in advance. Any kind of help is much appreciated. Himanshu |

Continuous HDD read in Vista
It is most likely the indexing, super fetching, etc. functions of Vista. Just
give it a few days all all will be back to normal. Don't worry about it -- yet. -- I Bleed Blue and Gold GO BEARS! "Himanshu" wrote in message ... Hi, Just installed Vista. Continuous HDD read in Vista
Thank you for a response.
This is the second time I'm installing vista. First time I had this problem and also some other issues with previous version of windows that existed before vista. (I only have an upgrade Cd, so can't do a clean install). Well, I do think this is one of the unwanted features hoggin my HDD. Sometimes it's Winmail, sometimes network service of WMP, somtimes some other stupid thing that (after I terminate) stops this HDD activity. I have checked my pc for all sorts of other problems, but can't figure this one out. I check virus, adware, malware, torjans, etc... did all the maintenance functions like clean-ups, fragementation, etc. None seems to work. Do you think I should stop some services and check? Thanks in advance. Any help is much needed. Himanshu "Cal Bear '66" wrote: It is most likely the indexing, super fetching, etc. functions of Vista. I think (I'm also not Cal but I think he'll agree) you should leave it alone
and accept it as "This is one of the things that Vista does". Indexing, preloading, a number of things happen when you first start Vista and indiscriminately disabling them (or other services) in your quest to quiet the hard drive could result in decreased system performance, system instability or inability to search for documents. -- Richard G. Does anyone else have this problem?
Why do you see it as a problem? It doesn't affect you in any way, does it? It's just Vista doing it's thing. Don't worry about it. Steve |

Yes, I totally agree with your further observations and suggestions. Just leave
it alone for a few days. -- I Bleed Blue and Gold GO BEARS! "Richard G. Harper" wrote in message ...
