Default dissapearing files

Hello, I have Windows Vista and need some help.
I was recently organizing my pictures when a bunch of random ones went
missing.

Here's what I did:
-Highlighted group of jpeg photos.
-Renamed entire grouping by right clicking on one of highlighted group.
-All the names where changed with the addition of (#) beside new file name
to identify each image.
-I right clicked again and hit "undo rename."
-I right clicked again and hit "redo rename."
-Over 50 pictures of the total 80 dissapeared. It seemed to be a random mix
that were gone.
-I checked my recycling bin and the pictures weren't there either.

I tried this little experiment of renaming/undoing/redoing multiple times
and always got the same results.
Can anyone help me relocate my pics??? Is it a bug???

Hello,

this happens for me, too. I can't tell you if it's a bug, but at least it
seems not to be expected behavior.

Greetings,
P. Di Stolfo

This is definitely a bug!

I just completed some testing on this and can confirm this behavior. Even
worse, this appears to happen any type of file and in any folder on the hard
drive?

I'll start checking with some MS resources and see if I can find any more
information on this.

This definitely a bug. I've seen it reported in an MVP ng. No workaround
as fas as I can tell. Also, the files appear to be permanently deleted.
Only thing I can suggest is an undelete program might be able to recover
them, depending on how much activity you've had on the drive...

Thanks for your help guys. I'm frustrated to have lost my pics but impressed
to have actually found a bug!
