Default poss solution to generic volume and usb drive problems

was having a hell of a time trying to get my Vista x64 system to recognize
all of my card readers and my usb hubs. For the USB hubs it would recognize
2gig or less flash drives but nothing over that and when I opened "my
computer" I didn't see the typical list of all the 'virtual drives' I was
used to seeing. I tried redoing the INFCACHE.1 trick, and edited my registry
to point to system32 and sysWOW64, non of which worked. Then, while removing
a program I thought might have started the problem I noticed something I
hadn't seen before in the uninstall/change programs. On the left hand side is
a link that says "Turn Windows features on or off" and when I opened it one
of the options was "Removable Storage Mangagement" and it was UNCHECKED. So I
decided to check it (and a couple other things I thought might be useful) and
sure enough when I booted back up all the card readers, usb hubs and flash
drives worked like a charm. If you've been sharing my frustration you should
try it and see if it works.
Ciao,
