Do your icons move when you plug the monitor in? I have the same setup
and my icons will move when my laptop screen is off (i.e. when I close
my lid). But they move back as soon as I open my lid back up.

Make sure you have a check mark next to "This is my main monitor" for
your laptop screen under Display Settings.
