Default No audio through built-in laptop speakers

I have an HP nx9420 and i get proper audio output via the "high definition
audio device" through speakers, but when i unplug the speakers, it says no
device plugged in, so i dont get audio through my laptop's built-in speakers.
anyone know of a way to fix this? thanks
