Yes. If you use the Ubuntu linux release for instance, you can use Wubi
to install linux inside of Vista. You can also setup what's called a
"dual boot system" which necessitates each having their own separate
hard drive space (partitions etc). Linux can also be installed to a USB
memory stick or USB hard drive. Linux can also be used by installing
virtual machine software such as Virtualbox or VMWare etc inside of Windows.

You can also try out various linux releases without installing anything
by downloading and burning the LiveCD's.
