i'm not quite sure why it's doing that and its really bugging me. the hiss
isn't loud or anything but it is pretty noticeable. any person i have asked
who have laptops haven't experienced this problem. is there some way to stop
them from hissing?

I have this same hiss. It has the same patter like the "busy" noise your
computer makes when many programs are on simultaneously.

This is really annoying. When I hit the mute button, the hiss
disappears.

It's a DELL Vostro 1000 Laptop.
