New router, no internet (but works)
Ok Subject is confusing, but so am I.
My wireless router bit the dust. Got new one (Netgear WGT624NA). System is desktop, Vista Home premium, wired to router. Carefully followed installation directions from CD. Everything seems to work, can do mail IE explorer etc. However in the Networking and Sharing center there is a big red X between my 'network' and the Internet. Access is 'Local only'. Clicking on the red X brings up "Identifying problem" and results in a "Windows Network Diagnostics" ----- You might need to sign up with this network's Internet service provider (ISP) to get access to the Internet. Connections to webpages are currently being redirected to a different webpage. Click to open the webpage If this is an ISP sign-up page, you can read the sign-up information. ----- Click sends me to www.microsoft.com The strange thing is although it says access is local only all web access works just fine! Mail, IE7 works just as expected. Also on another machine (laptop running XP) everything is just fine also. So I guess the basic question is who/what is redirecting me (actually I don't seem to be redirected, it goes where I tell it to). And more importantly how to get rid of the X and the 'local' only status. ps have redone the installation 3 times Michael

you don't need an install CD to setup a router. uninstall whatever
software you installed, and then do a system restore to before the first time you ran that CD. reset the router to defaults using the reset hole/button. power cycle your broadband modem (unplug it and plug it in again) now power cycle the router. reboot your computer. see if you can surf properly. if yes, you can log into the router using admin as the user name and password as the password. change the password for the login. change the wireless SSID from the default and use WPA2 for security.
