Clarify please. Do you mean System Restore says it failed to restore
your system, or do you mean it doesn't fix the problem?

If the former, do you run Norton Antivirus or System Protection (or
whatever they call it)?

No, I do not run Norton Antivirus, but you mentioning System Protection -
Windows Defender - is a very good tip indeed, thanks! This may well be
the
reason why System Restore fails to work.

So I turned off Windows Defender and opened System Restore, but
unfortunately the oldest restore point is only two weeks old. And the
problem started just before Christmas.

But that's a good tip, I'll remember in the future to rurn off Windows
Defender before using System Restore.

I have never had a problem with System Restore while Windows Defender is
running, but I have with Norton.

Norton protects itself so well that it blocks System Restore.

What I did when I ran Norton was to do a System Restore, then when it
failed I would remember to turn of Norton's self protection (not turn
off Norton, just disable *only* its self protection). I hardly ever
remembered in advance :-)

I haven't run Norton for a few years (the above is only one reason).
