Default vista wanting drivers

I recently purchased vista home premium. I have 3 usb flash drives and
external hard drive. None of them work. Each time I plug them in, vista wants
me to install drivers. I do not have cd's. Ive been to my local pc shop and
advised me to re-intall vista. which I did. No changes. Can some boffin out
there please help?
