Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
Hi all. Hope this helps some. I caught the updater before it could start up
and manually installed and rebooted after each update. My Mouse went bye bye on Vista (KB938371). Did a restare and all was well. I am putting update on manual until I see a fix has been issued. I suggest the rest do the same. "SkyKnites" wrote: x64 vista home premium here, I narrowed down my problem to vista trying to find a driver for HID mouse, if i cancel out it keeps working without error, just pops up everytime i reboot... new hardware found and driver instal failed. Mouse shows no error in device manager and I installed 64bit intellipoint with no problem, just no driver for HID mouse device. The problem is definetly related to USB , HID, and seemingly the patch a few days ago triggered it, although removing the patches did not fix it for me. "DesireeStar" wrote: OK My problem is similar enough to post, the only difference is I'm running x64 Ultimate. Since yesterdays update, no USB mouse will work. To troubleshoot I: Changed batteries. Changed the Mouse to a different USB mouse Changed the USB ports. Tried PS2 PS2 are the only ones that work. My USB ports are fine, I can see drives etc from them, but not the mice. When I try to plug in my logitech Cordless Trackman, it tries to install drivers, which it doesn't need to do. What the... Soooooo who do I yell at to get my mice working again? I hate ps2. -- DesireeStar |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
Same exact problem here, but Vista 64 Ultimate.
Installed KB938371, and at first bootup lost use of my Logitech USB Trackman Wheel. It was showing up as a Generic USB HID device, and not responding.. Other drivers were showing up as "unknown device", when I rebooted, it turned out that was my keyboard and laptop's touchpad - both of which interface through USB. On that second reboot, keyboard and mouse stopped working completely - and computer was as good as dead. Luckily had a full backup. I've found no other solutions yet. Installing drivers manually gives me errors about "access denied", "file not found" or messages about the driver being "designed for windows 95 or later" and missing part of the INF file. This is a REALLY, REALLY bad one, MS. As another poster mentioned, a lot of folks having this problem won't even be able to respond or complain online, and I'll bet it'll take a few days before the Tier 1 tech support people at MS's call centers realizes it's not just people with faulty cables / unplugged mice. This has been the first update in years that has simply knocked my computer dead. Automatic updates are now OFF, and will remain so.. Hopefully a hotfix comes in days - not weeks. Smooth move, microsoft. |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
I have been plagued with your problem for months. I have to go to safe mode,
uninstall all the drivers, reboot and eventually everything *might* start working again. After maybe a week or a fortnight if I am lucky, I will then have another random USB shutdown. Vista sucks. I think the only solution is to upgrade to XP. |

"SkyKnites" wrote in message ... More and more complaints are rolling in, we can only hope they will get it fixed and patch again to help us out :/ It sure seems to be usb related, HID devices,(mice and keyboards) most notably. Like me! I spent two days repeatedly hard-rebooting my computer (ie just pulling the plug out) until eventually Vista installed the mouse and keyboard drivers. |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
I fixed my problem by changing the mouse entry under Human interface devices,
to HID-compliant consumer control device. Theres a more complete fix post under my thread "Mouse not recognized after reboot following the 4/8 patch" Hope this helps some of you "Rich T" wrote: I have been plagued with your problem for months. BTW, why don't they just call it a frigging mouse in Device Manager? Did Dr Spock design Windows? |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
I fixed my problem by going to device manager and uninstalling everything under the HID section. Mouse now finally works after 2 days of struggling to fix it. -- SimpLe SI |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
LoL, I know and fully agree, but to make sure I was clear on what i was
doing.... In device manager there is a catagory called mice and other pointing devices. In that catagory it is called mouse, and uses the intellipoint software for a microsoft mouse. The change I made was in the Device manager also, in the catagory "Human interface Devices" and i changed it FROM mouse TO HID-compliant consumer control device. Having 2 places with the mouse listed was either causing the conflict, or blocking the load of the driver, when it requires this usbtype driver instead, I am hoping this includes keyboards for those having usb keyboard problems also. From what I read and correct me if I am wrong (sure someone will :P) HID was supposed to replace/upgrade the usb interfaces and never fully reached it's potential and was integrated instead. I look at it as a bridge between the onboard USB hubs and the system interface. So something like, mouse/keyboard to USB hub to HID interface to System (where the device is finally called mouse or keyboard, hard drive, etc). No reason why vista or the last patch interuptted this, but if you look at some the posts over the last 18 months, several vista patches has had this effect. As a side note for self builders and upgraders, Improper power supply size can cause havok with usb devices. Ya I learned that one the hard way too "Rich T" wrote: "SkyKnites" wrote in message ... Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
All this week I'd work out of my office. I left my mouse on work table and
use my HP Compaq nc6320 laptop without it. I'm back today and found my usb mouse doesn't work now. It works good on my wife HP Compaq nc6320 with Windows XP but not for me :-) with my vista business. "Scott J. Stringfellow" wrote: Yesterday my Vista32 Ultimate was working fine, this morning it was in Standby mode - not normal behavior, as I have backups & scanning running most of the night. Powered on and found mouse didn't work. After that keyboard failed. Worked on it, found it to be Win problem but not sure what. Reading here I may be victim of USB problem, though I've been running fine since Christmas. Tried Safe mode, no change. Eventually got it back to Last Good Config and it worked but before I could do a restore it loaded new device drivers for my USB, apparently 3 drivers - Generic USB Hub, USB Composite Device, & USB Human Interface. Once they loaded keyboard and mouse died and even a restore to Last Known Good hasn't fixed the problem. I also tried a ps2 connector keyboard & mouse and they didn't work either... not quite sure why there, as I thought that was different than USB, but hey... I don't know everything. (smile) Any thoughts, directions, assistance appreciated on how to get my system running again. Thanks! Scott |

Vista32, new driver? & USB Mouse/Keyboard not working
I found solution on MSDN forums :-) Third item from below guide help me. My
usb mouse work again. Symptoms: Old usb devices worked fine new usb devices would not install patch Windows6.0-KB940199-x86 or x64 would not install (error "this update does not apply to your system") pointing the installation to C:\windows\system32 returned an error The issue is solved now and I took a few roads to get here. I tried moving around the usbstor and deleting the infcache.1 with no results. My computer had best results with number 3 but i will post all my steps. 1. I opened the device manager and uninstalled all the entries under Universal Serial Bus Controller. Vista will try to reinstal them as you uninstal, just keep track of what you have uninstalled already. After you have uninstalled all the entries restart Vista. After this I tried installing my new usb device... no luck 2. Download update KB940119 (either x86 or x64), using 7-zip extract the installation file and copy the file Windows6.0-KB940199-x86.cab to c:\ (i choose c:\ because it was easy to type). In CMD type "start /w pkgmgr /ip /m:c:\Windows6.0-KB940199-x86.cab" (copied from earlier post xechvol) after install, reboot machine again. I tried my devices after this and again nothing. 3. After plugging in my new usb device, from the Device Manager window, click "Unknown Device" and click update driver. Click Browse My Computer for Driver Software. Either navigate to or type C:\Windows\winsxs and go on from there. This one worked for me after pulling up a warning about the driver not being digitally signed or something. I have rebooted my computer and installed 3 other new usb devices all of different nature and all three have installed fine without needing any input from me (just the way it used to be). |
