Ever since I started using Ready Boost, Vista will no longer read flash
drives (USB or SD) that use FAT. When the drives are inserted, Vista will
request to format the drive. If FAT is selected for the formatting, the
formatting will fail. If NTSF is selected, the formatting will succeed and
the device can be used. However, I can't use the typical flash drives that
others will give me because they are usually in FAT format. Also, other
devices using SD flashdrives can only use the FAT format. All drivers on my
computer are up to date (at least according to Vista). I have disabled Ready
Boost, but that resulted in no change.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong?

Well, by accident, my computer is now reading FAT flash drives. Here's what
happened.

Due to other problems with the audio device driver, I had to run the Check
Disc tool on the C: drive (right click the C: drive in Windows Explorer,
select properties, select tools). You can't check the C: drive while Vista
is running, so the tool requests that a check be completed the next time you
start Vista. However, this did not happen on my computer because the
Autochk.exe file was damaged. To replace this file, see this very helpful

If finally got Check Disc to run. Afterwords, Vista could start reading the
FlashDrives using FAT again. Not sure why, but the FlashDrives with FAT are
useable again.

Hi...

I have the same problem with a Kingston USB Drive(its FS is FAT too); Vista
can´t read it, even the PC stop all process while it is trying to read it...

Maybe the main problem in your case was a corrupted file and not due to the
chkdsk.exe file; i mean, chkdsk solved another problem that causes the unable
capacity for read the USB drive...

I will try this solution, i hope this solve my issue...
