I have started this but then Vista locks up on me about 40% into the
extracting files options. I am trying this first to see how it looks and
feels before I have to blow away my existing OS system. The installation
process tells me that the Upgrade Option is not available for me.

The Virtual Hard drive is just like your main computer. If you don't have an
operating system already installed on the Virtual Disk, you can't upgrade.
You need a full install version of Windows 7.

I believe you can but must be at SP1 for VPC2007.

How large is your VHD? You need at least 20GB for a Windows 7 install.

if I'm not mistaken win 7 does
not really upgrade you system.

instead it acts like a clean install.

my suggestion is to ensure you
have backup'd you documents
folder,

then launch the win7 install via
the desktop or explorer.

Play it safe

buy a new HD...they are now dirt cheap.

Put the new drive in place of the old one and perform a clean install.

If it works you can put the old drive in and retrieve your data
and keep the old drive as a backup.

If it does not work...then you still have your old OS safe and sound
and you can just use the new drive for backups
