Vista Anytime Upgrade by
[email protected]
I have been running XP forever. Too old of a machine to run much newer OS'es such as 10, or 8/8.1... So I decided to check out Vista.
I purchased an Anytime upgrade disk (Supposed to be new) on E-Bay.
It didn't come with a COA...Shouldn't it have?
or Did I get hosed by the seller?
I didn't want to do a "Clean install" and loose a bunch of stuff I collected,
and from what I read you are supposed...

WannaCry patch by
Tim Slattery[_2_]
I used a link on SlashDot to find a WannaCry patch for Vista on
Microsoft's web site. The file I downloaded is named
windows6.0-kb4012598-x86_13e9b3d77ba5599764c296075a796c16a85c745c.msu
When I run it, it puts up a box labeled "Windows Update Standalone
Installer", which contains a progress indicator labeled "Searching for
updates...
And there it sits, with the progress indicator spinning and...

No updates for Vista? by
sctvguy1
I have Vista Home Premium on an old HP laptop, using it for gaming, and
Windows Update will NEVER come up with any updates. It has the SP2 and a
few updates from January, but nothing since. Has anyone else seen this?

Window Clicks Ignored? by
(PeteCresswell)
I replaced the System drive on somebody's Vista box - and things got
better response-wise.
But now it seems to be slipping into a state where clicks on windows are
ignored. Click on a desktop icon, no problem... full functionality.
But click on an open window or dialog box to close it, resize it, or
just click a "Yes" or "No" button and there is no response...totally
dead. This even...

can Start button filter out files from Dropbox? by
Laurence Smith
I used to use Dropbox on my system and then found it slowed my PC and
gave more problems. Have gone back to it and find this frustration.
When I place a word or two in the Start Search box at the lower left it
returns two versions of each hit. One is the local file usually found
in one of the My Documents folders and the other is the one that is
found in the Dropbox folder.
I don't want the...

Problem with Windows Update by
Graham Naylor[_2_]
Hi,
I have just dug my old portable (runs Windows Vista and cannot be upgraded
to Windows 7) to use when needed but have found it will no longer run
Windows Updates and that my Antivirus wouldn't check for updates as well. I
have checked that there is a working internet connection (by loading various
web pages in Internet Explorer) and that Update Automatically is turned on
in the Control...

Do Vista and 7 have to be near the beginning of the drive? by
Micky[_2_]
Vista part at **.
I'm sorry to ask elementary questions, but where on the HDD does win7
have to be installed. Does it have to be near the beginning of the
drive like some earlier OSes did?
I have a 500 GB drive with 2 100-GB partitions already. If I create a
3rd 100 GB partition, can I install win7 there?

WMI Provider Host stopped working and was closed by

Computer: Dell Dimension E520 Viiv Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
O/S Vista home premium
I am receiving the following error message which pops up shortly after bootup.
“WMI Provider Host stopped working and was closed”
I uninstalled the Dell Support Centre, believing it might be causing the
problem since it appeared after I had installed that program. Initially,
that seemed to cure the...

Registry Fix by
Greg
Vista really hates this program. I ran it and then did a disk cleanup. When
cleaning it pretty much deleted all my programs and user settings. All the
programs I had were removed from the start menu. All my personal directories
were gone too. Live and learn.

Something Seems TB Eating CPU, But What? by
(PeteCresswell)
PC is spending most of it's time at 100% CPU, but the heavy hitter seems
to be hiding in SVCHOST.
viz: http://tinyurl.com/jyr7l3l
Response time was (and still is) at a crawl.
Ran MalwareBytes and removed a couple of bad actors, ran the Norton
uninstall for Comcast's competing anti-virus (Avast already installed).

3 data related questions. unrelated file in use, RAM, pagefile by
Micky[_2_]
3 data related questions.
I'm using Vista but it's a lot like w7, and these questions apply to
XP too, I think.
1) Coming out of Windows sleep or maybe FFox crashing, I'm looking at
Win Resource Monitor, Disk, and I see about 500,000,000 Bytes/minute
being read from C:\downloads\xp-downloads\COL18341.exe which has
nothing to do with anything. It's some sort of Photosmart Premier 7.5
for HP...

datastore\datastore.edb by
Micky
I'm using Vista but googling has shown the exact same problem is found
in win7. The relevant file exists in XP, but I don't know if the
problem does or not.
AFAIC, I've solved the problem, so this is just to share with you. The
solution was simply to turn off automatic Windows Update.
Vista is getting few or no updates these days. Not sure about 7, but
there is manual update.

Is root directory a protected data area? by
Micky[_2_]
Is the root directory of the windows/system drive a protected area in
Vista or Win7?
I have an early recollection of that being the case, or at least of
having trouble updating files there, but I can't find it online.
All I can find on this is "In short, UAC monitors a list of
protected folders and registry locations (\Program Files, \Program
Files (x86), \Windows, and HKLM\Software); any...

HP Compaq: DOA - Obvious Things To Check? by
(PeteCresswell)
Family members HP Compaq/Older Athlon X2 just went belly-up.
Only sign of life is a single green led glowing on the mobo: no power
supply fan, no CPU fan, no response to DVD drive's eject button...
First thought was power supply, but when I swapped in a known good power
supply, no change.
Then I figured "Maybe the on/off switch"... so I pulled out the switch
and used a knife to jumper the two...
