Google search Acer diagnostic CD. Download and burn .iso. Boot from
the CD and run the diagnostic and see what errors it returns. You
could be having several different issues causing the machine to lock
up and become unresponsive. It is likely not OS after restoring to
factory settings, so it would likely be a hardware problem. There are
other things you can do such as removing/swapping memory, etc, but the
diagnostic disc should help you find the issue.

Do a factory-default recovery with the recovery discs supplied with the
PC.
It will wipe out everything that's currently on the C: drive but he can
get everything back from the backups he made earlier - If he didn't keep
any backups I'm amazed because a hard disk can fail at any time and not
having backup copies on a different drive is just plain stupid.

first thing
Try to run malware bytes in safe mode
Download Malware Bytes
'_http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html_'
Install it and reboot the computer in safe mode and run the malware
btyes..

If you have the tools
remove the hard drive, connect it to a computer that have an updated
Antivirus program and run a scan..

Also try to reset you IE to the Factory default

1. In Internet Explorer, click *Tools*.
2. Select the *Advanced* tab.
3. Click *Restore advanced settings*.
4. Click *Reset*, then *Reset* again.
