Media Center Closing Down with Video Play
Whenever I try to play a video file in windows media center, it says that
there is a problem and either closes or restarts. This extends from shows I tape off TV to DVDs to files I have downloaded to the files that came on the computer. It plays music fine and shows pictures without problem. WinAmp can play the video files I have downloaded without issue as well, though Windows Media Player does not work for video. It also seems to record television fine. I can see a thumbnail of the show afterwards, but if I try to watch it, it shuts down. The files it records to are also unable to play in WinAmp. Does anyone know what my problem is? It seems a windows software issue, but I can't find any drivers that are old and the media center itself is up to date. |

I don't have Nero installed on my computer, but I've researched it a little
further. I installed and then uninstalled some codecs. Without XVid, I can listen to some TV shows in Media Player, I just can't get video. With XVid, the program crashes. Without XVid, I can't play files correctly through WinAmp. With it, I can. "JW" wrote: Have you installed Nero on your system? If yes this might be the cause of your problems, regretfully I have not yet come across a full proof solution to the problems Nero causes. |

Which exact XVid crash are you getting? http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket will help you identify the specific crash. There's a lot of crashes here, and they aren't using version numbers, which makes looking into their crashes difficult for now (I believe they've been advised on that, but will check). What do they say about this? In theory they should be responsive... Have you tried using FFDshow instead of XVid? In theory there's three or more diferent codecs you could use here that all do the same thing, so if one crashes, uninstall and try the other. =\ -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. -- "George Hargrave" wrote in message ... It appears that the codec activity has destroyed and/or removed some of the
files in the MS provided decoder which is used by MC in Vista. Possibly a Vista repair will reinstall the MS default decoder. Another option may be to install the 30 day free trial of the NVIDIA Decoder and then use the utility in the following link to switch MC from using the MS decoder to the Nvidia Decoder. http://mediacenterexpert.blogspot.co...r-utility.html "zachd [MSFT]" wrote in message ...
