Vista driver for my HP Color LaserJet 5 does not print test page. Vista
recognizes device and loads driver but Test Page will not print. I have
tried the HP Universal Printer Driver. It prints but characters are too
large.

I am using a Manhattan Parallel Port Cord (model 165297), which has the
Vista updated driver.

What do I do now? Hopefully, not a new printer because Vista will come off
the PC in a heartbeat.

I'm somewhat at a loss, here, because we have an HP color LaserJet 5 and I
can print from Vista to it fine. Note that this is NOT a direct connection,
it operates through an HP JetDirect unit and Vista is configured to use a
standard TCPIP port with the JetDirect's address. The Vista driver I'm
using is the in-box Color LaserJet 5/5M PostScript driver.

The printer is attached directly to my Dell XPS410. Vista recognizes the
printer but after installation, the test page hangs in the printer until I
delete it. I also have tried a Parallel to USB port cable. The result is
the same.

I haven't given up just yet but I am close

Change the parallel communication setup on the printer. I'd start by
disabling Bi-directional. Just change the printer setting and power cycle
the printer. If none of the printer settings works, then I suggest getting
a different USB to parallel conversion cable but HP will tell you straight
out that this configuration is not supported.

If all else fails, get a network card for the device. It's the old old
style so you can probably find a reasonably priced NIC.

I tossed most of my old cards.

Just for some googlers out there...

I had a problem w/ Vista / HP Laserjet 5 Drivers. It'd recognize the
document, but never send it to printer, finally ending in Error.

Printer was connected via Ethernet, router, cat5, local home network,
but, I did the add printer, add local port, add tcp/ip port, on to add
driver procedure. It got thru installation and everything seemed fine,
but again, when attempting to even print a test page, error.

I simply uninstalled it, went to add it, chose detect printers on local
network, it found it.. let it do auto install, replace driver, etc.
worked.

no biggie, just a quick tip for ppl out there googling laserjet 5 and
vista

Hi there, did you find a solution? I have the color laserjet 5 which is
connected to a new pc running vista although I had to install a pci card
with a parallel port (not on the new pc). I send prints and I get the
message "invalid job" Aborting job" which appears on the printer itself
NOT on the PC monitor?? I would be very grateful for a response.
