If it turns out we can't get your drive working then an external drive
can be an excellent solution. As stated earlier the Mat****a drives are
known to be "not so great" and when looking for a new drive we'd be
happy to help.

What is the model number of the laptop. Sone drives are easy to get
hold of, and easy to fit.

Torz, again depending on the laptop brand. Many brand of laptops have a
dvd that is a customer install item. Post the model and brand and then
we can tell how easy it will be to change.. Laptop dvd's are a bit more
expensive and can be real easy to change....

Laptop DVD's are a breeze to replace unless it is a dinosaur, some slide
right out, some have two screws visible from the bottom of the notebook. You
can find one on eBay for peanuts.

I've had op;tical drives fail at just 6 months. It honestly depends a lot
on how you look after them and how much you use them. Replacing them is
easy in a desktop. Remove the side of the case, AFTER turning off the PC,
find thr back of the optical drive, disconnect both cables (power and
ribbon), unscrew two screws and the drive will slip forward where you can
remove it. Installing is just the opposite. The only thing to be careful
of is if it's an IDE drive (wide ribbon cable (as opposed to small and
usually red narrow cable which is SATA) is to make sure the jumpers in the
replacement drive are set the same as the old drive. If it's a SATA drive,
there are no jumpers. It would take me approximately 3-4 minutes to replace
a drive.

Where would I find the model number hon? Sorry :-/

I personally think it just needs a new drive but when I mentioned it to
dad he went mad at me said it was only out of guarentee two months ago .
blah blah blah. like its his money that I am going to spend. so I
thought I would double check all avenues before I take it up to pc
world.

It does not play cd's. they all turn in the drive but nothing ever
happens.

I wouldnt know where to start changing a dvd drive ... I should do took
a course on fixing a pc last year ha ha.

ok there is the screen shot from imgburn.

I tried that update button, it took me to another forum that quickly re
directed me to a page that is not working lol. I am unlucky.

The make of the laptop is a philips freevents x59p

Any of you want a laugh? I was away Sunday and thought I would pick up
a computer mag to read on my travels, grabbed one with a disk on it and
thought, hmm I wonder if any of the programs on here could help fix my
computer. How I was going to run the disk with no drive I will never
know. Doh

So is it time to hit the thing with a hammer? or go to the shops to
buy a new drive lol.

TBH, the picture is too small for me to get the model number from your
drive. It looks like UJ850s with firmware 1.60, but I can't be sure.
Unfortunately slimline drives like yours don't get as much support as do
the 5.25 drives found in desktops....and on top of that it's a mat****a
drive. It might just save you some headache to get an external drive.

As far as the link you were redirected to, RPC1 recently changed
servers and the format of their site so linking to current firmware via
Imgburn probably won't work right again. I'll have a chat with LUK
about it...maybe we can get it changed.

I'd personally go for the Samsung drive as it's the external equivalent
of my 203B and is one of my all time favorite drives. Stay away from
HP's and Sony's as they are rebradged (OEM) usually from Lite-On or LG.

I dont want an external drive though, cos my laptop is for traveling. I
am away at least two nights a week and have to cart it around with me.
Thats most probs how I damaged it tbh, not that I have ver dropped or
banged it.

Sorry about image .. re sized it for u.

I think this is simply going back to pc world for a new drive lol.
What tends to break in the drives? do they just burn out or something?
I am clueless with hardware.

Have you deleted your upper and lower filters in the Registry?
