Default CDDVD Combo Drive Question

Hello,
I've had this problem with my CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive for about 2 weeks. I
can write/read DVD's just fine. When I put a CD of any brand, blank or
with data on it; it will not load. When I go to my computer and click on
(E it will eject the CD and tells me to insert a disk. First i tried
HP Total care, i talked to 3 different technician's. The first one told
me to see if the drive had a red/yellow icon by it in "device manager".
I said no; then she tells me to update my drivers and firmware. Which
are both up-to date. Later that day I try again with another technician.
This one takes me through the registry and tells me to delete the upper
and lower filters on a certain key. Then also gives me a link to set all
my CD/DVD combo drives defaults. I do all of that & some other things I
don't even remeber! I got so frusterated that I just reformated the HD.
That did nothing ither, it still just ejects the CD. It tries to load
the cd but it never does. Is it possible for the CD to fail, but not a
DVD? It just doesn't make sense! I just bought this PC in feb '08, I
would hope that it didn't fail yet!

My device:
TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653N SCSI CdRom Device
Driver Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Firmwa 0609

Default CDDVD Combo Drive Question

What is the date of the driver release?
Have you updated to Vista SP1?
I suspect that the CD head has suffered an early life failure. At least it
is still under warranty if that is the case

Default CDDVD Combo Drive Question

If you have a bootable CD, try booting the computer from it.
