Default Way to verify product key PRIOR to installation?

So I was recently given an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate along with its
product key. I was assured that the computer was never activated or
setup, but obviously I am wary about it. I currently have XP installed
but would like to go to Vista Ultimate if possible... is there a way to
check to see if a product key is valid or in use PRIOR to reformatting
my computer and losing my data? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry, but there isn't any way to do that. You may want to image your
hard drive first just in case there is something wrong. Imaging is A Good
Thing in any case. I like Acronis True Image and I store images on external
hard drives. Restoration takes around 15-30 minutes so if your key is no
good you can get back to where you were easily.
