Default Vista Media Player won't work

I have a Sony Viao (1.66 ghz 1 meg memory bulk standard model) It came with
Vista Home Premium pre-installed. WMP was working the one time I tried it
earlier this week. Now, it refuses to respond to any attempt to run it
(Insert various disks, use start menu - anything!) However, if I go to the
Media Centre, it works through the Media Centre. BUT I dont want to use MC
all the time - and can't change the settings / preferences. It may be
linked to the first time I ran Media Centre but I don't know . Help??

I am having the same problem. I can start Media Player as
administrator (right click, etc) and i can run it when logged in as
another user. I know it works. but when i run it myself it i get the
"hourglass" (circle) and then nothing. the process doesn’t show
on the process list.

same happens when i browse to the exe and run that, so i know it isn’t
the shortcut.

Try rebuilding your library database by renaming the folder your library
database is in: http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary.

Thanks Dale, but it did not work. I have the impression that it is tied up
with the 'administrator' rights. Im signed in as the administrator but
sometimes Vista does not recognise that!

If you create a new user on your PC and log in with that account does WMP
run?

I'm also having problem to start VISTA MEDIA PLAYER. It all started after I
installed VLC Player. I removed VLC Player and VISTA MEDIA PLAYER still won't
start. I was wondering if there's a way to remove VISTA MEDIA PLAYER and
reinstall it? Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. If I turn off UAC (which I don't want to do),
it runs fine. Some of Internet explorers doesn't work correctly without
running as administrator. For example the text box that shows the info of the
posts only shows up when I start IE as an administrator, otherwise i have to
double click the post to read it. Everything works fine on the other user
account.

Hello I'm having the same problem i think. I can start windows media player
as an administrator but even though i do this i can't play files that are not
already in the library. Moreover i can't take a file and add it to the
library with the mouse, i have to add it by looking it directly. Its really
annoying. Other users, that dont have admin priviligies dont experiment this
problem. A solution could be creating a new account and erasing the one with
the problems but i dont fell like doing that. Another solution could be
restoring the system. Even I tried this, a problem appears that tells me that
the restauration wasnt completed due to and unknown problem.
Windows update doesn't show any solution as it may not consither this as a
problem. Moreover I suspect that an actualization may have caused this
problem.
If you find any other solutions... PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Thank you. Bye

If you reset the library--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary
-- does the library then function correctly... ?

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
