Surrogate Com - Irritating crash of Surrogate Com
Hello.
I am a big movie fan and have lots of gigabytes on my pc. I am using Vista Ultima 64 and all updates has been installed. I dont have Nero installed just before you ask, but i use Advanced Vista Codec pack final version. I am pulling my little left over hair as i am getting this Surrogate Com error all the time when i browse trough my movies what i ofcause use thumbnail view. I have read and tryed every thing i can find on the net but dont seams to work. Vista tells me it is a problem with Xvid codecs and i shall download the latest update what i think is already included in the Vista Codec pack. The link they add for the download on the problem solver ofcause dont work. Can somebody please give me a helping hand as it is realy getting on my nerves. Thanks. Finn. |

I see that that already has a response present, since you're crashing in the third party XVID decoder. Is that response helpful? If not, uninstall XVID and you won't get this crash anymore. You may find that FFDShow Tryouts offers more stable XVID/DIVX decoding. -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. I try to uninstall xvid from the Vista Codec pack and yes the error stops but
also i cant see any thumbnails anylonger so this is no option for me. I did noy understand what you meant FFD show, is this a replacement for xvid and how do i get the thumbnails to show? You might want to advise them that they caused you to crash. That's not nice of them. It's not a Microsoft product. If you're trying to get thumbnails within the 64bit shell, you need a 64bit codec. I don't know if FFDShow Tryouts has a 64bit version yet - that's something you could check on, or you could follow up with the XVID project people (I wouldn't trust ANY codec pack from ANYONE) to see what their 64bit story is. After all, this way, if you have problems - you know whom to talk to. Right now you've been blindsided by badness and the path is unclear, but directly dealing with the appropriate vendor's site will probably make your life more straight-forward. Note that XVID/DIVX support on 64bit native is pretty poor right now. This is one of the reasons why you use Windows Media Player 32-bit by default on 64bit systems. You're trying to force an area where third parties are still catching up. =) -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
