You might try installing DX9c from Microsoft. It includes some dll's from
previous DirectX that aren't included in Vista. Although, I thought Doom was based on OpenGL... Give it a try and let us know. i got over the DPLAY.dll error by downloading the dll file separately and putting it in c:\windows\system 32. but now i have big problems with screen resolution. no matter what size i have set it to be, or whether it is supposed to be window or full screen, the game always comes up in full screen as a small narrow monochrome picture at the edge with flickering around the edge of the screen. help! anyone know what it is or how to fix it? -- lordgibby0 |

Hey, you are in LUCK, did you know that the old DOOM engine is now FREEWARE?! That means that all the source code has been online for years now, and since then people have come out with GREAT Windows compatible versions of DOOM. Of course the files that contain all the levels are not free, but what you can do is install these windows versions of Doom where you have Doom Collectors Edition installed, run the new DOOM version and you should be able to play all the DOOM games you own in a windows compatible application. There are even versions of doom that you can put on your PDAs, or other handheld devices. Let me see if I can find a version to get you started. Ooo, look, a Google search for DOOM for Windows brought up the following: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_pl..._on_Windows_XP (Lots of links to new Doom Engines as well as how-to setup instructions) http://www.doomworld.com/doom4win/ (looks old) http://revolution.cx/DoomCE.htm (Doom for Windows Mobile) Hope that helps you out a bit. I have DOOM running on a hacked PSP: http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/doompsp.shtml PSP is a great homebrew device if you're lucky enough to be able to figure out how to patch the firmware. Too bad Sony keeps trying to stop the hacks from coming out, and too bad the PSP battery sucks ass. -- Joe |

Try using DosBOX which is excellent emulator for DOS. What OS are you
running and how are you executing the game? Are you running it in a compatibility mode? -- "lordgibby0" wrote in message ... i got over the DPLAY.dll error by downloading the dll file separately and putting it in c:\windows\system 32. but now i have big problems with screen resolution. no matter what size i have set it to be, or whether it is supposed to be window or full screen, the game always comes up in full screen as a small narrow monochrome picture at the edge with flickering around the edge of the screen. help! anyone know what it is or how to fix it? -- lordgibby0 |

I'm running the Doom Collector's Edition in Vista Home Premium and I had the same problem(s). This is how to solve them. First download the dplay.dll file as has already been described above and insert a copy into the three separate folders for Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom. You now have the necessary files for the games to actually run. To cure the resolution issues, here's what you do. Double-click the desktop icon for the game you want to run. The Doom For Windows 95 Launcher will open. Click on Advanced. Click on the Screen Resolution tab. You'll probably find that the resolution is set to 320x300 and for the game to run in a window. Set the resolution to 640x480 and set it to run full screen. Click OK. Click new game. Go frag things! Hopefully this will solve your problems -- Senban |

The Doom Source Code was released to the public a long time ago, lots of people have written clients that run natively in Windows NT/XP/Vista, you may still need to make sure DirectX is up to snuff, but at least with a native client you won't have to run Win9x DirectX libraries. Doom runs on toasters now a days, just gotta get the right client and a CD with all the .WADs (Level data, still copyrighted, but the game code is open source) -- Joe |

It's your video card being too good for the game. Go to the folder where the files are kept and right click on each application, select properties, and run it in compatibility with Windows XP or earlier, and run in 256 colours and 640x480 resolution. That's how I got mine to look normal. -- AshidoYukira |
