Suspect Service/Software by

Hi there,
I have a service running that points to an exe file in my windows temp dir,
every time I end the service the exe file disappears and will reappear later,
every time the file appears it has a different file name. e.g. FA31DC.exe
normally after ending the service 3 or 4 times it doesnt start up again for
quite some time unless I reboot the system.
I have Trend Micro installed and...

Remote installation fails on create subfolder below c:\windows\winsxs by
Rolf
My software distribution tool fails because of it is not able to create
subfolders below
c:\windows\winsxs
I saw, that only the group trustedinstaller can create objects here. What is
the best pratice here to allow my remote installation tool to create the
subfolders needed to run the application.
Thanks

Off Topic, but . . . . OneCare by
Imageman
Pardon my off topic post, but I have to vent somewhere after waiting on the
phone for eon's to speak to a Microsoft representative.
You can no longer cancel subscriptions to Microsoft products (in this case,
OneCare) on line, and you have to call customer service. Of course there is
a barrage of sales crap on the phone while you are waiting, and waiting, and
waiting. This was my third...

Problems with VISTA and smart card login by
Jesper
Has anyone had any experience with VISTA and Navy & Marine Corp
Intranet (NMCI) smart card DOD CAC cards. VISTA sees the smart card
when inserted but say it is unable to read it. Wondering if I could
use my DOD CAC card with PKI certs to login to a VISTA laptop equiped
with a smart card reader to improve security.
First, that will only work if your domain controller has DOD PKI...

Windows Defender/Update by
Bakes
I have checked and rechecked my firewall settings...but for some reason, I
cant get either of these to work. Vista will NOT ALLOW ME ( yeah...I am
admin, but we all know how well that works in Vista) to update. Is there
something I am simply overlooking?
Thanks!

Vista Domain connectivity VERY flakey by
Edward Ray
After running Vista on a few machines in my network, I have come to realize
that Vista seems to (over)err on the side of security. DFS shares, printer
shares, authentication, etc. all the things that run quite efficiently with
Windows XP SP2 and 2003 R2 machines have occasional issues under Vista.
Vista appears to address the mobile laptop security issue very well; however

Defender service on Vista x64 won't start by

Just installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit version a few days ago. Defender was
working normally. A day later, possibly coinciding with having installed the
updates from Windows Update, the Defender service will not start
automatically or manually.
I tried every "fix" I could find:
- Client for Microsoft Networks is installed
- I unchecked all the boxes on Windows Update (WU) settings,...

UAC not letting me enter an admin password by

I'm trying to run my main user account as a non-admin, but any time I try to
perform any admin task, the UAC prompt tells me I have to enter an admin
password and hit OK. The problem is, there isn't any textbox to enter a
password! OK button is disabled (I guess I should expect since I haven't
enetered a password), but how am I supposed to perform any admin task? And I
can't log in as an...

Firewall Applications to Permit by

Hello!
I'm trying to finish configuration of the Windows Firewall with Advanced

permitted the applications I've installed access.
What I can't get to work is Windows Updates / Automatic Updates. Does

accomplish this? What other Vista apps will...
