.mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
OK, great! Guess that's why free quicktime wasn't working for all those who
complained on forums cuz they hadn't loaded SP1 to Vista & other codecs didn't work. I'll wait til SP1 is auto loaded so I have right codec then download itunes & quicktime. Ur post should help others with same conversion problem. I will post again as soon as I try it to let U know if solved. Thanks, Silverwire -------- "PapaJohn" wrote: I use iTunes on my XP, Vista and Vista SP1 systems... it's a free download from http://www.apple.com/mac/ the installation includes a QuickTime player... which provides the codec needed by the Expression Encoder to handle MOV files.... just to recap what's happening. I'd wait on SP1 until you need it or it's automatically updated by Microsoft. The only reason I have one system running it is because I'm a beta tester. My production system doesn't have it. Thanks for the good comments... -- website references are to www.papajohn.org PapaJohn (MVP) "Silverwire" wrote in message ... Thanks, PapaJohn. You are most helpful on any forum I found & only one giving info specific to my problem tho its not yet solved cuz I dont have iTunes or QuickTime & all forums say free quicktime doesn't work to convert .mov on Vista. So do I need to buy QuicktimePro or whatever has iTunes bundled & install SP1 before I can convert .mov? Or do U have any other solution? So far, I find no other workable "free" or paid solutions on any forum or ad, & I don't want to buy something that won't work. I havent installed SP1 yet cuz I just read caution on Windows Update for Vista users to wait til April for "automatic" update of SP1. Also Office Depot computer rep told me yesterday MS plans release of SP2 in April or May so I wonder if SP2 is "fix" of SP1 and reason for caution remark. Any idea on this? Sorry to ask so many questions but I am new to Vista, had Windows 2000 b4 Vista (no XP), and no movie or digital photo or ipod, etc. experience and trying not to crash my system like I hear others do from trying random stuff. Checkd out ur website - it's GREAT! Very well written, clear explanations for lots of other problems. Other users should check it out. Thanks again. .mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
PapaJohn--
According to the Microsoft Expressions website, we can download a trial version of the Encoder. At the end of the trial, we can either buy the program, or let it revert to the free Express version. I'm just looking for something to convert .MOV files to something compatible with Windows Movie Maker, preferably something other than .AVI. Do you know if the Express version will still make the conversion, or is that one of the functionalities that will be disabled at the end of the trial period? Thanks! .mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
Papa John:
You gave me good advice to "wait for automatic update of SP1 unless you really need it", and want you to know I'm still waiting cuz I don't want to download SP1 from Microsoft since now I know why it hasn't appeared on MY automatic update. Mike Nash, Windows Product Management, has blog "Windows Vista News" at link: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/wi...vista-sp1.aspx ). Nash says: "In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience." I must have some of those drivers that don't update correctly and since I don't need any "bad experiences", I think I'll wait for SP1 to appear in automatic Update. If you want to hear lots of bad experiences trying to download SP1, check out the windowsvistablog.com site and read about angry Vista users upset with Microsoft because of many SP1 issues: not identifying which drivers don't work, not fixing driver problems before release, no "official" one-stop website to address issues and problems directly. MS could have sent notices via auto-update about cause of delays and problems instead of allowing users to spend useless hours trying to install or fix crashed systems. Very bad PR for MS and their SP1. Meanwhile, what is Microsoft Expressions? Is it something I can use to convert MOV files to WMV? Does it need SP1 loaded first and will I still need Quicktime? (which downloads needed and in what order?) Thanks again, Papa John, for good advice and clear directions. .mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
Hi Silverwire,
Yes, the free trial and then the ongoing free Express version of the Expression Encoder 2 can convert MOV files to WMV. It's now in first place on my website's list of conversion tools for the file type. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/...y=encoder2beta It needs the SP1 version of XP (when you're ready for it someday).... and the .net framework version 3.5 (which it'll download/install for you as part of its instsallation) To handle MOV files, it'll need codecs... if you don't have them, downloading/installing iTunes, with the optional QuickTime Player... is sufficient. http://www.apple.com/itunes/ thanks for the good words -- PapaJohn (MVP) www.papajohn.org "Silverwire" wrote in message ... Does it need SP1 loaded first and will I still need Quicktime? .mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
PapaJohn:
Did you mean Vista instead of XP? You say "it" (Expressions) needs SP1 version of XP & the .net framework version 3.5 (which will be dwnload/installed for me "when I'm ready".) Sure hope you meant Vista cuz I never had XP. I bought HP Media Center system new last March 2007 with Vista already installed. (sometimes wish I bought XP instead!) I'm ready, but it's either Vista or drivers not ready! The link I gave last week (Nash, Windows Product Mgmt) says problem with SP1 & Vista, not XP. Says no MS auto download of SP1 on Vista if drivers don't pass some "use test" MS uses during auto update & no SP1 auto dwnload until new compatible drivers available. Most who download from MS website say have system crashes, probly frm those uncompatible drivers. Many on forum really upset cuz MS won't say WHICH drivers don't work with Vista & SP1. They want them ID'd so users put pressure on driver mfg's. to make compatible w/Vista sooner. I would too if I knew which. Any idea which drivers cause Vista problems? I think maybe my new HPC5180 printer I got same time Vista. Sometimes printer freezes up Vista system, have to disconnect &/or restart printer, sometimes delete print spool file to release system. Trying to convert .mov files in Vista has really opened a can of snakes (not worms!) for me & many others as I see on several forums. Guess I just look at it as opportunity to learn but sure is time consuming! Hope MS & drivers get compatible soon! Thanks again for your patience and information. .mov videos don't work in Vista, can't convert
John:
Thanks for reply, but need to know if you are using MediaConvert on Vista? If yes, did you have to download (or did MS auto download) SP1 to Vista? I read Kim Komando's report on trying MediaConvert for some video files and she said while it worked for her, it was rather complicated to use and I'm not sure she converted .mov files. Lots others on this and other forums offered advice for conversion programs but none were specific to Vista and/or to converting .mov files except PapaJohn. Most were for XP which I don't have, or for other types of files to be converted. Most posts on .mov conversion are questions "how to" and horror stories about trying to convert (with no solutions) or else they don't say what OS they were using. I use my computer daily for several groups emails and information newsletters, and other stuff online every day so don't want to crash my system which is what I see talked about on this and other forums where users have tried many different programs to convert .mov files with very bad results. Right now, I need my computer for all other stuff more than I have to convert my .mov files although I sure would like to be able to convert a few short videos I took on trip to China 2 years ago. I could not find any Vista success stories till PapaJohn's reply plus I found the MS forum which explained why I had not yet seen auto download of SP1.
