William
I know this is kind of off topic, but has anyone tried the install either Linux or Windows on a 4 gb USB Flash drive and then boot their computer from it? If so, what would be the procedure and how would be of a benefit?

Second Monitor troubles with Vista Home Premium by
William
I have recently purchased a new HP Pavilion Notebook with Vista Home Premium
on it. I have a second Monitor, color, made by Trinitron in 1998. It worked
fine as a second monitor on my old laptop running XP.
When I connected it to my new laptop, it works fine while it is booting up,
showing everything fine. Shortly after it reaches the point where my desktop
has appeared, the picture starts...

can't establish Bluetooth connection to my mobile device by
Willi
Hi!
I'm using Vista Home Premium with an internal Broadcom Bluetooth device.
When I'm trying to send a file to my mobile phone, the phone can be found, I
am asked to set a key for the transmission (on Windows), but then nothing
happens, and I get the error message "The process can't be executed because
the user is not authenticated" (Maybe it's not really that message in
English, I...

dvd writer no longer recognised as writer by
Willem
Initially my dvd writer on my Acer Aspire notebook works fine,
but when I active media center on Vista it is no longer recongised as a
writer.
It shows an error "no burner attached'.
In de device manager it shows as a CD-Rom and reports errors with the driver
but when I try to update the driver it reports I already have the latest
version.
I had to go back to factory reset to get it working...

Inspiron 8600 - No screen shutoff on lid close by
Will Eriov
Hi all -
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 which I've been using with XP for years but just
upgraded to Vista Business Edition last week. The OS has been running
smoothly so far, but I'm having one specific problem: when I close the lid on
the notebook, the screen no longer shuts off. I don't want the computer to
go to sleep--I just want it to shut off the LCD. Any ideas what might be
going...

Format and Chkdsk of USB Flash Disks by
Will
How is one supposed to check for errors on, and reformat, a USB flash disk?
I assume these things all have some specialized geometry, and a standard
command line CHKDSK or format is going to mess them up?

How Do I Determine The Serial Port In Use? by
Will
Vista appears to have done away with the Ports applet in Control Panel.
When using a USB to serial adapter, how do I determine the actual serial
port number? Every time I plug it in I get a different serial port number,
so I need to be able to rediscover the serial port taken on an ongoing
basis.

wireless broadband by
will
Can anyone tell me if it's possible and economical to have wireless broadband
without having a fixed land line connected because i'm sick of paying the
line rental on a phone that i just about never use. I sometimes think we pay
through the nose for communication that's not really up to speed in
Australia.

Unknown device by
Will
Device Manager shows something on my system doesnt have drivers for it. Now
I would assume its something to do with the Asus Motherboard ( A8n32-sli
deluxe ). The location is PCI standard ISA bridge. Waste of time asking Asus
as they only seem to be worried about products in the last month or so.
Now should I be worried ? Will it slow my system down ? Any idea what it is
?

Audio, Video and 64 bit migration. by
Will
1) On Vista Home Premium, with Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE, Dungeon Siege II does
not show red dot enemies in the small map Viewer! It is rather slower than on
MCE2005 also. Would be happy to learn how to correct this if there is a way.
Tried the Beta Driver as well, no change.
2) MCE2005 Realtek Audio worked great for Quad setting with Yamaha home
stereo in blue line in plug. Realtek High Def...

Canon i865 Printer by
Will
Ok, Vista installs its drivers and it works but I cant get the CD Label
Print to work. Actually it wouldn't let the auto run work so I installed
Label Print by exploring the CD and finding the exe program. Now the problem
is that this program comes up with a message that it needs a compatible
printer to work........it doesn't recognise the Vista drivers I would
assume. Now this is the only...

Has Anyone Tried Installed to 64GB SSD SATA Drives? by
Will
I noticed that SanDisk released a solid state hard drive replacement that
they are claiming sustains 60MB+ / second throughputs. Has anyone tried
installing Vista to one of these?
http://www.sandisk.com/OEM/ProductCatalog(1321)-SanDisk_SSD_SATA_5000_25.aspx
Do these kinds of SSD drives suffer from the same limitations that flash
memory drives do in that too much write activity wears them...
