Power Plans by
Patrick
Hey there... (i have a notebook) I have noticed that unless you have three
powerplans, the system tray icon doesn't really help.
I wish i could RENAME power plans at will
I wish that clicking on the system tray icon for power settings gives more
than three options. The alternative is that i open up the power settings and
UNHIDE the HIDDEN profiles... but why are they hidden?! they're pretty...

Is there any certification mechanism of ReadyBoost for USB flash k by
Neil Perng
Dear All,
As you know, we could find many products claim (or are tested) to be
ReadyBoost-compatible, such as http://www.grantgibson.co.uk/misc/readyboost/.
Is there any OFFICIAL certification mechanism of ReadyBoost for USB flash
keys from Microsoft Vista?
Best Regards,
Neil

Please FIX WMP11 Library Search/Manage performance by
cvp
This is really a WPM11 item, but in Vista there is no option to roll-back to
the WMP10 version.
Please reinstate the "Add to Library by searching computer" function
available in previous versions.
The "monitor Folders" function does not provide a manageable alternative for
large libraries. It forces unnecessary searches through the library each time
WMP is opened. It also forces an...

The defrag function in Vista is very slow and does not show a progress bar
during
its operation. Is there a third party program available which is compatible
with Vista?

How is optimal CPU frequency computed in Vista? by
Roof Fiddler
Why does the CPU run at less than 100% of maximum frequency most of the
time, even while CPU usage never drops to 0%? Vista (RC2) is showing the
graph of my CPU usage and frequency, and CPU usage is averaging about 40%
while frequency is averaging about 85% of maximum. During the times when the
CPU has anything to do at all, shouldn't it be running at 100% frequency,
and then drop down to 0%...

Can't get past desktop by
PG
I've installed Vista 32bit and I can't get past the desktop before it stops.
I've got the following spec computer;
160GB HDD
1GB DDR RAM
256MB GPU
2.93 GHz Pentium 4 CPU
16X DVD-RW Dual Layer
Not that you need to know all of that but I can't figure it out, I've got
the minimum specification but the performance is diabolical.

IE Has Stopped Working Error Message by
elinden111
I am currently running RC2 with little problem, except the following:
Whenever I close my IE 7 browser window, I get a pop-up error that says
"Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working", and that it is looking for a
solution to the problem. The IE browser then restarts. If I kill the
restart, I get a "runtime error 217 at 03F71F76", or a "Com process" error.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Deleting 1 of 2 vista installs by
Dan
I have newly built pc with several hdds. One of these had xp home on one of
3 partitions, the other had Vista 64 bit on 1 of 3 partitions. I had a
problem with this Vista installation which I was not able to resolve with
the Vista repair utility, so I decided to reinstall Vista. unfortunately,
rather than replacing the existing Vista installation, it installed a 3rd
OS/2nd Vista on the...

WMP Monitor/Search performance by
cvp
I'm using the 64-bit RC1. The first WMP monitor (since search is no longer an
option) of a specified folder is abysmally slow (compared to WMP10 on XP). I
have over 50,000 tracks (all wma lossless and previously searched and found
on xp). It would take WMP10-XP an hour or so to process. I don't know how
long it'll take on rc1 ('cos it hasn't finished!), but I estimate it'll take
at least a...

Vista runs terribly slow by
LJ Thilver
I have RC2 installed (clean install) on my laptop with a 1.8Ghz processor and
2Gb of RAM. If I'm not mistaken this should be able to run Vista fairly
smoothly but it is the exact opposite. Opening most programs, changing
windows, moving files (all which didn't produce that much lag in XP) slow my
PC down considerably. Also startup times tend to run to about eight minutse.
Any suggestions or...

LanMan service stalls by
MarcelD
I am using RC1 and having trouble with startup. Booting the computer takes
more than 10 minutes. Fortunately I am able to crank up Task Manager in that
time, where I noticed that the 'server' service is stalling for a long time
before it loads. I confirmed this by disabling the service, after which the
computer starts up normally.
I haven't seen any reports in these newsgroups about this...

Performance index subscores on late model laptops? by
Roof Fiddler
I'm planning to replace my desktop with a laptop, and want to get a general
idea of relative performance in Vista.
Anybody running RC1 or RC2 on a late-model laptop with a 7200rpm SATA drive,
can you post your hard disk model and Vista's performance index hard disk
subscore? I've got a 7200rpm 300GB Maxtor SATA desktop drive (model 6B300S0)
with a score of 5.3 in RC2, and want to see how...

Results come up with 242 items, 1.41 MB.
About 10% of the results are directories named "small", and the rest are
files with names beginning with "small".

ReadyBoost - Same USB Drive, Different Behaviour in 32 & 64 bit Vi by
Bob H
Hi,
Experimented today with a Verbatim 1GB USB flash drive as a ReadyBoost drive
- its very fast in XP so I was expecting no problems.
It worked fine in the 32 bit version of Vista, but the 64 bit version
refused to use it as it "didn't meet the perfomance requirements" necessary.
Any thoughts about how to get it working in 64 bit Vista - suspect two
possibilities:

3rd party Defrag or Vista? by
pippin
I installed DiskKeeper with Beta2 and then installed PerfectDisk with RC1 as
DiskKeeper wasn't set for this version when released.
I know DK is compatible now but I would like to know if it is best for us to
use Vista's own defrag despite the lack of GUI (worst bit)
I have DiskKeeper downloaded again but don't know if I should install or
does Vista know best where the files should be?
I use...

Vista Backup by

I have 2 computers on a network at home. I am trying to backup files to the
other computer on the network. The Vista backup wizard allows me to select
the drive and even the folder on the other computer. However, when I click
NEXT I am prompted for a name and password to access the drive. I used the
one I have created for the other computer but I get the message....

Flash as RAM? by
Michael
I remember reading Vista has a feature to use Flash memory (ex. USB memory
stick) as (extra)RAM. I tried to find this feature in RC1 - USB attached but
no sign of it in Task Manager/Physical Memory.
