Restore from backup fails (RTM Ultimate) by
Bill Cohagan
I've just done a fresh install of Vista Ultimate RTM -- before which I of
course did a full backup of the original Win XP system. Now I'd like to
restore my data files from the backup, but the restore is failing --
apparently due to security interference.
My backup is done over the network using Ultrabac backup software. I'm
trying to restore a folder that lives at the top level of the C...

OpenSCManager fails access denied by
Dave G
I have an application on Vista that calls OpenSCManager():
hSCManager = ::OpenSCManager(NULL, NULL, SC_MANAGER_CONNECT);
and is returning access denied.
This happens even if I am logged in as a user in the Administrators group
and run the program set to "Run as Administrator" to elevate privileges.
This code runs without a problem on Windows XP.

DON'T DISABLE the UAC or you'll loose file and registry virtualiza by
mik
if you disable the UAC you're stupid because the first virus-trojan you get
will be able to destroy your computer just like happens in Windows XP.
if you disable the UAC, you'll loose also the file and
registry virtualization needed to work bad designed applications as standard
user.
PLEASE don't be stupid, don't disable the UAC and be happy to run Windows
Vista as a Standard user

I'm using a HP nc6220 laptop with vista rc1. I'm trying to setup Bitlocker
but accordig to windows there is no TPM module present. I'm sure there is a

anyone know about vista drivers for TPM? Or is this a bug in windows?
Thanks for any response,

Remote desktop blocked by DEP by
@ndyB
Hi there,
I've recently installed Vista Ultimate (final version), from the MSDN
subscription site.
On a whole I'm quite impressed with it, few driver issues and a few other
niggles one of which is that it won't let me run Remote desktop.
Keep getting the message that it's been blocked by DEP (Data execution
prevention) yet it won't allow me to turn off DEP for this particular

IE7 protected mode: Off by

I'm running Vista RTM and have UAC enabled and have checked "Enable Proteced
Mode" in IE7 and yet the information bar says "Protected Mode: Off". Is this
just a bug or is Protected Mode actually not running?

Application won't save last state by
JM888
The application installed fine under Vista. However, when you exit the
application all state information is lost. I have tried disabling UAC and
running as admin but that did not seem to correct the issue. Is there a way
to determine if this is a security issue and what the violation is?

Return from screensaver on a locked machine shortly exposes the desktop by
Fabian Ottjes
Hi,
I lock my machine (using win-l), the screensaver kicks in, I move the
mouse so that the screensaver stops and for a short while I am able to see
the desktop background which I should not be allowed to see since I have not
unlocked the machine, yet. Can anyone else reproduce this bug?

Self-registering DLLs in Vista? by
Adam Hilstad
Hi, I'm wondering how to allow a DLL to self-register when running Regsvr32
in Vista. I'd like to have an elevation prompt appear when Regsvr32 is run
for my DLL, but there seems to be a catch-22 invovled he If I put the
self-registering behavior into a COM object, this would require that the COM
object first be registered before it can be created with
CoCreateInstanceAsAdmin. But...

'sudo' in Vista? by
Jan Wagner
Hello,
seeing that via the GUI now all applications have the shift +
right-click popup menu with a Run as administrator entry, is there
any way to achieve the same from command line using good old 'runas'
or with a 'sudo' that will use the same GUI confirmation prompt of
the UAC instead of prompting for password?

"C:\Documents and Settings" after upgrade? by
Jan Wagner
Hi,
more a "nice to know" question he
After doing an upgrade from XP SP2 to Vista RTM, it seems what was
previously "C:\Documents and Settings" is now C:\Users, but the
folder "C:\Documents and Settings" is still there. Running cmd.exe
as Administrator or normal user, "dir "C:\Documents and Settings""
just says File Not Found. NTFS messed up? Or is Documents and
Settings still used by...

Application subfolders in Program Files by
RazorD
Hey guys.
After reading various posts here, i see the Program Files shouldn't be used
for writing application data to. The problem is, lots of applications which i
use daily do that.
(Furcadia, an online game, is the particular example i'm using now)
Basically, it downloads all the map data, to C:/Program Files/Furcadia/tmp,
and all logs go to C:/Program Files/Furcadia/logs - But i cant see...

Firewall switches off by powersave mode by
ZA must be off for MS Office site
Under Vista RC1 my ZoneAlarm is incompatible. So I fall back to MS Firewall.
I leave for a while, powersave comes on - I have made some changes to it but
powersave can't be turned off - and when I return Firewall is off. This is
unnerving.
Any ideas?
