RegistryPermissionAttribues by John Bowman
Hi All, I've got an app I need to modifiy that's written in C# VS2005/.NET 2.0 which is dsigned to ONLY run when the logged in user has administrator privileges. At one point it needs to delete a HKLM\Software\... registry value if it has, in fact, created it. So there is a method that deletes this registry key. The method has the following RegistryPermission attributes....

IE7 detect protected mode in script by Ty
Hi, I was referred to this group because the people on the scripting/IE groups thought I'd have better luck here. I need to identify if IE7 is running in protected mode on Vista so my web page can help the user (in a user friendly way) add my site to their trusted zone. Does anyone know how to do this using scripting?

Starting administrator progs from a service using Windows VISTA by polynom
Hi, I have a problem in launching an application through my service. I am trying to launch e. g. update.exe through my service. The update.exe has a UI. The UI should displayed on the current desktop. But the update.exe has to run with admin rights. Therefore a UserAccount exits. I´m trying this stuff with using the "CreateProcessAsUser" API function. Here my code (pieces):

system dlls are not loaded at preferred image base in RC2 (5744) by Arpi Jakab
Hi, The preferred loading address for ntdll.dll v6.0.5744.16384 is 0x77EE0000, yet the loader rebases the dll to 0x77AE0000. Since ntdll is the first to load, it is certainly not colliding with other system dlls that would cause the rebase. Not sure about RC1, but this certainly worked in XP. I noticed that kernel32.dll is also rebased. This seems like a general problem with the loader. -...

Virus in download, Widows did not detect by Steve
I had troubles with allowing Windows to unzip a zipped folder so I looked quickly for a new utility for unzipping, I had troubles using the alpha zip and 7-zip that are located on the drive that has XP. So in haste after frustrating times trying to unzip a folder that is routine because I use the software, I downloaded Ace zip. I scanned the download with CA that is up-to-date and it...

How to get to know an "unknown publisher"? by Andrew Fiddian-Green
RC1 reports that digitally signed software is from an "unknown publisher". This is irritating when the software concerned was actually written by myself. = So how do I tell Vista that software signed with my own cert is "known"?

After years of security enhancements in Windows, is privilege separation _still_ impossible? by Roof Fiddler
Whenever I try to install a program, it requires administrative privileges. How do I grant an installer permission to write its files into c:\program files\whatever without also giving that installer permission to gather up all of my private data files and send them over the internet to the program's author?

What causes UAC prompts - is there a list? by Harpo
Hi, well I googled a lot and still can't find a list of things that will bring an UAC prompt if a program attempts to do them. I only found some recommendations , like "don't write to HKLM" , but indeed these don't cover everything. Is there a clear list of what does and what does not bring an UAC prompt? For example, is it possible any sort of 'Read' operation to trigger it

UAC and scripts (.wsf) by Thomas Boerkel
HI! I'd like to mark some .wsf scripts as "needs admin rights", so that the user gets the UAC prompt, when double-clicking on them. If they were .exe, I could create a .manifest file but for scripts, I would need a c:\windows\system32\wscript.exe.manifest. Not only would that be annoying for our customers (putting some file in system32 folder), but it would also affect *all* scripts.

starting windows defender by Joe H.
If you go into task manager, select "services" tab, as well as the services button. You will then be brought to a window with a list of "services." Navigate to Windows defender, click on it, then on the top left, you should see the option to start manually. Do that, and then open windows defender. "Vipin" wrote: I have never got the defender working on XP Professional SP2 at my office....
