Bitlocker Validation Info by niknik
Hi, I was wondering what exactly the Validation info is that is protected by the VMK. In some doc I saw it protects some exe's? How? Bitlocker is very interesting, especially the Elephant paper. Congratulations on getting Vista out, BTW.. Thanks,

Hi, for some reason windows defender is blocking google desktop as a start up program and I cant launch it either. For reference if you have not seen this, this is the software explorer and it has the program and says if it is clasified or not and some reason it says it is not classified. But that isnt the problem. When I click on it I cant choose to enable it so either it is a probelm with...

Bitlocker experience by Luis Carlos Delgado (Costa Rica)
Hello: I installed Windows Vista RC2 last sunday, and enabled Bitlocker that same day. At first a little bit reluctant to the idea of having my whole volume encrypted and potentially locked, since this was a fresh install (still had no valuable info), I went for it. Since my laptop does not have a TPM chip, I had to stick with storing the key on a USB drive (which happens to be an iPod...

Recommended license & trial coding by Andre Lorbach
Hi all, I am looking forward to make an application complaint to the Windows VIsta Software Logo Spec 1.1. Till now an administrative user always had full access to the registry. Now with UAC, write access to most parts of the registry needs to be requested. I have found a way to get this level of access, but the Logo guide tells me to only require this kind of access if necessary.

Need to replace dll in System32 with different version trusted ins by nat
Hi, I have read about WRP in Windows Vista but I still need to find a way to replace a version of ir50_32.dll which exists in C:\Windows\System32 folder with a different version in order to run some products. In Windows XP the installation setup takes care of this but in Windows Vista this directory is a protected resource and only TrustedInstaller has full control over the files. Hence,...

can't turn on firewall by Theano
Security Center reports firewall is off. Options to turn it on are grayed out and it says Group Policy is controlling my settings. Why, I am not on a domain? I'm connected to my home wireless network. Perhaps I don't really need the firewall behind a router, but it was on last night, before I upgraded to this RTM build. How can I turn it on and how can I turn off Group Policy settings.

Windows Live OneCare ?'s by Dr. Heywood Floyd
1 - Tune-Up has a schedule setting but no On/Off that I can find. Is there one? 2 - Tune-Up did a defrag on all three of my drives "C", "D" and "E". Is there a way to prevent this - to have it only defrag a selected drive? My "C" drive is my working drive and I have XP pro on "E" that I use for testing. I'd just as soon an application that I'm running from a chosen, booted OS 'stay home'....

cardmod.h still can't find it by Brian C. Barnes
I've downloaded the Windows SDK dated 11/7/2006. Can't find this file. I found a message posted back in 2004 saying that card services wasn't ready, but by now it should be, I would think. Anyone know where this file is, and how to get it?

Vista Encryption vs PGP by intwtl
I am now using PGP desktop on XP. I do not encrypt the complete disk, I use the virtual disk option (ie: folder). I do not need or want to encrypt the entire disk. I only want a folder and it's sub-folders encrypted. I also only want to open this folder when I need it, not at every startup. Can Vista encrytion do this ?. Thanks

Login Screen by A Lake
Are we stuck with the new Vista login screen, where you have the last user automatically displayed, or you select to choose another user? This seems very longwinded, and as I work in a school the last user account will simply be locked out after multiple login attempts. We use Xp and don't show the last user login for that very reason. Is there any way to change the login screen (in a...

NTFS Security by Spot
If you want to add a bit of security to your Vista system AND have another Windows OS installed, I'd recommend installing the other Windows OS onto a Fat32 partition. This way if someone else uses your computer and you don't want them to use Vista, or they don't want to use Vista, they wont be able to see your files because you're Vista install is going to be installed in NTFS right!? There...
