low sound by
JB[_5_]
Hello all
I have a new laptop, HP Compaq, running Vista.
I have the volume level set on high on the task bar, and in the sound
properties in the control panel, but all the windows sounds are hardly
audible. i.e messenger (yahoo & hotmail), email notification, critical
battery etc. All the ones I need to hear if I'm not right on top of the
laptop.
When I test the windows' sounds in...

Backup Software by
Shane[_5_]
Greetings,
Can anyone recommend backup software that allows me to select the folders
and files that I want to backup? I used to use the software included in XP,
and it worked well, but I'm now using Vista, and the included backup
software doesn't allow me to select the folders and files I want.
Thanks,
Shane.

memory query - strange! by
mrmcmint
Hi All!
I have a query regarding memory on my vista ultimate x64 machine.
I have 4gb ram installed, which is clearly detected as 4gb when you
right click computer and view system properties, however, my vista
sidebar gadgets say a total of 3581mb is installed, this is also
reflected in task manager under physical memory.
Another strange thing is my pc seems to use nearly 2gb when idle,

Tweaking Superfetch? by
Dave Warren
Is there any way to tweak what Superfetch loads or when?
My goal would be to either control what it loads to avoid infrequently
used data files from being loaded, or to turn it off entirely on battery
power.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Superfetch, but I'm running into
a case where I see Superfetch loading 100MB+ video files and a whole
chunk of my media library and whatnot into...

100% CPU Usage - Lockup by
entropy
Hi Everyone, I have a desktop computer with Windows Vista Basic 32 bit
(dual core Celeron, 2 GB RAM). After it has been running for a while
(typically an hour or 2) it frequently hangs up. I have a gadget that
looks like an analog speedometer & tachometer that, when this happens,
the CPU usage is pegged at 100% (RAM usage is low). Most of the time
when this occurs, I can't get to Task...

Explorer.exe crashes before desktop loaded by
David Neilson
Everytime I turn on my laptop, windows explorer stops working before the
desktop or anything else shows. I just get the sam error message on a black
screen with the option to either 'check online for a solution and close the
program' (no good!), or 'close the program'. When I do either of these two,
nothing happens, the black screen remains. I can load up task manager, but
thats it. I can...

Reinstalling a preinstalled Vista OS (on HP laptop) by
Josh Reece
My OS (Vista Home Premium Build 6000) came preinstalled on an HP laptop. I
seem to be having a lot of problems*, and have now lost all my System
Restore points. So I'm thinking of reinstalling the OS. Apparently the
default option leaves the programs and data intact. But I'm nervous. What
risks are involved with this?
Thanks for any input.
(* Chief of these is that I can start Quattro Pro...

yseptis
Hi
I am a new user here with a bit of a problem, a few months ago I bought
my friends old computer. I knew he had have some problems whit it but I
assumed (yes I know big mistake) that it simply had to do with his low
power output. The motherboard and the main processor was sent to the
retailer and checked and came back with a clean bill of health. I since
