Find any file containing a string? by
Calab
The search function in Vista seems like a step backwards from XP...
How can I search for a file that contains the string "TSID", when I don't
know the file type? The Vista search function does NOT index all files and
even the files it does index don't have the contents as searchable.
I've looked in the indexing settings in the control panel and I can't see
any easy way to select all and...

Windows cant activate or update & I'm missing most of my control p by
paisley89
About a week ago I suddenly couldn't open itunes because Data Execution
Prevention prevented it and I also noticed that more than half of the entries
in control panel were no longer working and control panel wouldn't even show
up in my start menu. I realized the date that I had to have my copy of
windows vista home premium activated by had already passed and understanding
this to be my main...

Please help! Any help woud be appreciated!!
I just bought a new computer that came with Vista Home Premium. It had a
trial for 60 days for Microsoft Office. I ran that and pulled up the
Activation Assistant.
There are two steps. It says for the first one to click and it will give

Confused-swede
I would like to be able to listen to music in my computor room (through

My computor is build on a ABit AB9 pro motherboard with an integrated
soundcard.
Unfortunately the analog port is broken but the digital works.
So I bought a new Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio.
The problem in Vista is that I cant choose to have 2 default...

WinPE & dynamic disks by
Topcat
This is just a general query about how WinPE handles dynamic disks.
Let me explain the scenario...
I'm using Backup Exec System Recovery to migrate one server to another. The
SRD (Symantec Recovery Disk) is based on WinPE (you boot off it and then
restore the volumes to the new server).
My source server has 2 disks (1 basic and 1 dynamic). The dynamic disk has 5
simple volumes. When I try...

Cant boot Ultimate 64 by
skyoneder
So this is how it all went down, I have a program that totally
uninstalls software, its registry and little tidbits programs leave
behind. I was uninstalling a obsolete 3d program & the program froze a
bit, then my spybot activated and said something was trying to change
the registry, a windows media player exe file, and a couple of other
suspicious programs, it recommended I block it, so I did,...

Hello,
I recently purchased the Vista Ultimate 64 bit upgrade as part of 'The
Ultimate steal', but after multiple attempts to upgrade, I keep getting the
same error on the final stage 'Completing Upgrade', the error says something
along these lines: 'Windows installer has encountered an error and cannot
continue. Your computer will now restart and will be reverted to your
previous version...

Vista Problems by
Stu Davis
Some time ago I posted a two part question about lockups running Vista Home
Premium and about one of my logical drives on my external HD not being
available when running Vista.
Here is how I finally solved the problems:
1. I used Acronis Disk Manager to adjust the sizes of those two logical
drives, then copied the files from the problem drive (using my XP computer)
to the other external...

where to put hotkeys? by
charles cashion
Any shortcut will allow you to assign a hotkey to it.
But the hotkey fails to work. I suspect that the shortcut
has to be in the path. Under XP, I could put the shortcut
into C:\WINDOWS. Under Vista HP, I am not allowed to put
anything in C:\WINDOWS. (Even though I am administrator)
I suppose I could add C:\Users\ccashion to the path, but
I am not sure where to add it.
So I guess my two...

Retrospective Dual Booting by
Bolosun
Hi,
I have had a trawl through the topics here and on Google to dual boot a
system, but can't find the answer to my question. :o
I have built a Vista 64 system on one drive and still have my XP home
system on another drive. To build the Vista system I physically
disconnected my XP drive. When I have both drives connected my system
boots under XP and I can see the Vista drive as drive F and I...

Move Users from XP to Vista by
Ward[_2_]
Hi,
Just got my first Vista PC and was wondering the best way to move Users (my
kids) over to vista from XP.
Do I create users first on vista and copy all their dir's over or will the
files and settings transfer wizard be better?
Any resource to help with these kind of questions?

rewindurmind
Hi. I am having problems dual booting both Vista x64 and XP SP2. Vista
is currently installed, so I shrank the HDD volume and created a new
partition called "E", then formatted to NTFS. But, when I boot off my

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Windows Notification Area Issues by
Dave Lee
This is possibly related to a recent "System Restore" event that I had to
do - but maybe not.
I used to have several very useful notification icons in the Taskbar,
Notification Area, or System Tray (not sure which is the right name) that
was in the lower right hand corner of my Vista Home Premium system (Dell XPS
1530 laptop). This is where the Clock is, etc.
Recently (shortly, but not...
